Starting with VDA 2012 and up to 2109 starting MS Edge or Google Chrome leads to a lot of application errors in eventlog. Logged for every user who launch the browser and also if the browser is closed after. No issues so far reported by users but the application event log is full of these errors.
No errors with VDA 1906.2, 1912, 2003, 2006, 2009.
reinstalled the browsers and VDA with no luck.
anyone else with these behavior?

The browser issue with KERNELBASE.dll starts with VDA 2012. The tested VDA versions 1912, 2003, 2006, 2009 are all good.

Starting with vda 2103 there are a lot of issues:
- users are unable to start a published application suddenly. No errors. Log off by director or studio is the only way to work around. Sometimes there's a wfshell.exe not responding window.
- users launch the first published application, Workspace App progress window disappears up to 3 times. Launching another application shows the same behavior and in the end the session gets dis- and recoonected with the lastly started application.
- Since drag & drop feature is enabled by default (between local and Citrix environment) suddenly clipboard within the session stops working and users are unable to copy paste or drag and drop within the Citrix session. Only workaround: Disable the new drag & drop feature
- 3rd party application Xphone has a team panel window which cannot be dragged around if drag & drop feature is enabled. If the feature is disabled it works as expected.
- Some App-V applications not launching anymore with VDA 2106 and 2109
Same behavior with Citrix Workspace App 2105, 2107 and 1912.
Same behavior with multi session VDA 2103, 2106, 2109.
It's a Virtual Apps 2103 site. We have two of them. Same issues in both.
OS is W2k16
Installed VDA 2012 -> all issues are gone
Cannot find any new feature in vda 2103 which seems to be related or make sense. Besides there are not many new features onboard in 2103 officially.
Disabled Virtual Channel Security, Adaptive Transport with no luck.
Disabling Virtual Channel Security feature fixed the wfshell.exe crashes.
The session launch issues exists also in a Virtual Apps 1912 site with vda 2106. It has to be related to changes in vda.
-
I've rolled back to VDA 2012 and disabled the feature virtual channel security. No more issues. Needed to solve the issue for our users. Since I'm unable to reproduce the issue myself it will be tricky to update to a newer VDA in future.
-
I've rolled back to VDA 2012 and disabled the virtual channel security feature. Since then no issues. The issue with apps dis- and reconnect while launching starts with vda 2103 and persists up to 2109. see post Second App prompt a full reconnect then blink active app and open the called app - Receiver for Windows (Updater) - Discussions (citrix.com)
-
no more hanging sessions when logging out since I've disabled System Optimization. WEM has to be the cause of this issue.
-
Never resolved. Gone back to VDA 1906.2. Now we have a Virtual Apps 2103 site and the same issue with some users with VDAs 2103, 2106, 2109. It's also solved with VDA 2012.
More issues with VDA 2103 and up:
- Drag & Drop and Copy & Paste within a session suddenly stops working (if the new Drag & Drop feature is enabled, which is by default)
- Users suddenly cannot launch applications
- Launching applications is slow and with every application Workspace app disappears and reappears up to three times and eventually disconnects the session and reconnects instantly with the new launched application
-
We've tested with more VDA and Workspace App versions.
Citrix Workspace App 2105, 2107, 1912 -> issue exists
VDA 2109 -> issue exists
VDA 2106 -> issue exists
VDA 2103 -> issue exists
VDA 2012 -> issue doesn't exist
VDA 1906.2 -> issue doesn't exist
This shows issue starts with VDA 2103. I've read Citrix eDocs What's new in VDA 2103 and cannot find any related new features.
EDT (Adaptive Transport) is disabled in our environment.
I've disabled Loss Tolerant Mode, Profile Folder Streaming and Virtual Security Channel which are new features, but issue is still there.
-
Hi Gerd,
we have this if the new Drag & Drop Feature between local and Citrix session is enabled (which is by default). Set the Citrix GPO setting Drag & Drop to disabled, relogin and the test again.
We've updated our LTSR 1912 to 2103 only because of this new feature and we've had to disable it completely a few weeks ago.
Let me know if it fixes your clipboard issue within the Citrix sessions, please.

Hello Francois,
glad I've found your post. Seems like we are having the same issue.
We use Virtual Apps 2103 with Citrix Workspace App 2105 (2107 tomorrow), VDA 2109. Since VDA 2103 we have also some users with HP computer or notebooks who encounter this issue. It's a site where about 1100 users are working with and only a few users have this issue. They launch their first published application and the launch is slow, because the Workspace App window with the progress bar disappears up to 3 times. If they launch the next application the progress bar of the Workspace App is showing up again up to 3 times, the launched applications disappear and reappear with the 2nd application started.
-> With the same user on my notebook the session launch is working with no issues.
-> With the same user connected from the not working client to a VDA 1906 and upm 21.6 the session launch works
-> With the same user connected from the not working client to a VDA 2109 with upm 21.6 the issue exists
Workspace App clean-up and reinstall did not help.
Replaced the computer of one of these users with another model, the issue is still there.
I'm a bit lost.

Hi Peter,
I've disabled Adaptive Transport since XenApp 7.15 or something like that, since a lot of users had issues with it then. It's still disabled.

Hi Tony,
no, sadly not. I've disabled the whole System Optimization settings last week in WEM in one environment and will wait a few days to check if this issue still happens. I'll let you now later.
-
Tested with Workspace App 2107. Also not working. Made a field test with vda 2109 with some customers. While the new drag & drop feature is enabled every now and then copy paste in the same session stops working. Not usable. Very sad.
-
issue was resolved by updating Citrix Workspace App 2105 to 2107. Thank you

Hi Anthony,
did you ever resolved it? We have the same issue in a Citrix Virtual Apps 2103 environment with vda os server 2109 (also tested with 2103).
-
Further thoughts on my part:
wfshell is responsible for the redirection of devices (as far as I know) and rpm logs a device which is not possible to redirect because the virtual channel is disabled. Sounds to me like a good point to start investigating.
Some information about virtual channel security:
https://www.citrix.com/blogs/2021/10/14/virtual-channel-allow-list-now-enabled-by-default/

Hi all,
I've tested with VDA 2012, 2103, 2106, 2109. All with the same results. Same behavior as Peter Löf has written in his post. Some users open published applications and sometimes there's a WinFrame shell has stopped working error and after it they're unable to start any new applications. If they start another application Workspace App is loading, all open applications disappear and reconnect after 1 - 2 seconds but the new one is not opened.
Today I've seen two errors in the system event log, which are logged every time an affected user tried to start an application.
"NT-AUTORITÄT\SYSTEM tried to open custom virtual channel URBDRC" / Protocol System / Source rpm / Event-ID 16
"Custom virtual channel URBDRC cannot be opened by process [Not available]" / Protocol System / Source rpm / Event-ID 14
I've found some information about Virtual Channel Security in https://docs.citrix.com/en-us/citrix-virtual-apps-desktops/secure/virtual-channel-security.html. These errors are listed there. Starting with VDA 2006 Citrix introduced the new feature Virtual Channel Security and with Virtual Apps & Desktops 2109 the feature is enabled by default and only Citrix virtual channels are allowed. In our 2103 environment we have no policy "virtual channel allow list" but I suppose this feature is active in VDAs 2006 and up. Why else should the vda log events 14 and 16?
If it's related to this feature it's also explaining why not all users are affected.
I've installed Virtual apps and desktops 2109 in a test environment and grabbed the gpo reg key to disable this feature. Since it's available from vda 2006 and above but the gpo is introduced lately in the 2109 release the older vda versions should be able to read this reg key I think.
The key is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Citrix\VCPolicies
REG_MULTI_SZ VirtualChannelWhiteList
=disabled=
I'll test and let you now.

Seems to be related to vprefer. One of the 2 applications was installed in the image. As soon as I've uninstalled the application from appwiz.cpl the App-V launches correctly.
The other application do not start and is not installed local in the image. App-V Logs for running applications and the not running one are identical.
There has to be some changes to App-V with vprefer since VDA 2106 cause starting from this version the app-v applications do not launch anymore but I can't find anythin related to it in edocs What's new.
-
With vda 2109 2 of 5 app-v packages do not start anymore. Cannot launch application ...
We have a prod and a test version of 1 application. The test version is working, the prod one not with vda 2109. Both packages work with VDA 2103. Error: Cannot launch application
In another site we have 2 app-v packages published. One is working with vda 2109, one not.
Any ideas for this?
Site is 2103, vda's 2109, Server 2016

We don't use a publishing server and I've updated a package in Citrix Studio. After that I was unable to launch the App-V package "cannot start application". After some time I gave up and a few hours later I was able to launch the application successfully without any changes.
I've found a refreshinterval and refreshintervalunit parameter for a set-ctxappv... cmdlet, but it's only used with App-V publishing server.
Does anybody know how a updated package gets refreshed? What's the refresh interval? How am I able to enforce the refresh?
-
With the new feature drag & drop there are some other strange behaviors. We use application Xphone. You cannot drag the window from one screen to the other. After a few movements, the window cannot be pulled any further. Disable the feature and it's working again.
-
I've installed VDA 2012 instead of 2103. No more wfshell.exe issues. 2106 has also wfshell.exe crashes. Seems to be an issue starting with version 2103.
Existing seamless sesion is stopped when a new app is launched. The new app shows up, all windows are close and a new windows is shown.
in XenApp 7.x

Peter: Are you able to install VDA 2012 instead and check if these affected users are good again?
