App layering and ngen.exe

Hello,

We are migrating to server 2019 64b and wondering about this NGEN.exe. It took really long time (sometimes 3-4 hours) to finish. So which is the best script that we have to use? Currently we are using this one:

 

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\ngen.exe update
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\ngen.exe update
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ngen.exe update
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\ngen.exe update

 

So is it needed to use both 32bit and 64bit? And which switch is best option, because "update" tooks long time and 5-6gb disk space? Is it better to use "eqi" instead of "update"?

You only need the first two lines you have and you should be using 

 

ngen eqi 3

 

instead of update now. That was a change about 2 yrs ago. 

 

i have never had it take hours but that is dependent on apps.

and

ngen.exe eqi 

Those are same, right? By default is just ngen.exe eqi (without 3) ? Or I am wrong?

Per our docs here:

You will want to run "ngen.exe eqi 3" to recompile the .Net libraries. This is the option we have determined is required to most efficiently put the packaging machine in the correct state for finalizing the layer.
