.NET 4.8 upgrade on OS layers with app layering

Hello,

 

Has anyone done a .NET upgrade with app layering?  If so, what were the steps to do so?  Do you need to version your app layers or platform layer with the new OS Layer after the new .NET version is installed?

 

I know when we do VMware tools upgrades we always have to version the platform layer with the updated OS layer with the new VMware tools to avoid having issues with our app layered pvs images.

.NET should go in a new version of the os layer.  If you never upgraded within the os layer before there and the VDA installed .net in the platform layer then you will probably want to create a new platform layer after upgrading .NET the os layer.  BTW vmware tools should also be in the OS layer assuming VMware is your primary hypervisor that way packaging machines will have the latest tools.  Doing hypervisor tools in the platform layer is only for secondary hypervisors.

Thanks Rob. I figured the platform layer might need to be rebuilt since the VDA and CWA integrate heavily with it.

 

What about applications (app layers) that have a .NET requirement?  Is it necessary to rebuild those or version them with the updated OS layer?

Normally you don't need to update apps unless they installed .NET on their own.  As long as when you publish the image it shows 4.8 you should be good.
