Citrix XenServer 7.1 CU2 LTSR - Update Citrix XenServer Windows Management Agent to Citrix Hypervisor Guest Tools

Hey all,

we are running 2 Pools with Citrix XenServer 7.1 CU LTSR since 3 years now. On these pools a lot of Windows Server VMs take place - all operating Windows Server 2016 and 2019. The pools are on the latest patch level of Citrix.

 

I recognized that older VMs have Citrix XenServer Windows Management Agent installed (7.1.1305 / 7.1.1327), newer VMs Citrix Hypervisor Guest Tools (9.1.5). Automatic agent and i/o driver updates are disabled.

 

Is there any official path to update those agents to the latest version manually? I tried the following steps with a test VM - seem to work for now:

 

1. Stop application services

2. Uninstall Citrix XenServer Windows Management Agent

3. Reboot

4. Uninstall old network drivers in device manager

5. Install Citrix Hypervisor Guest Tools

6. Reboot

7. Reconfigure NICs

Uninstall, reboot and reinstall sounds like the path to me. I've never trusted XenTools so removing the old one, 

especially when they do major releases is a safer bet (with a snapshot beforehand !)
