RDP with sound

I am running a new Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 with all the updates.

 

I have installed a VM  (linux mint 20)     

 

I am able to RDP to the Linux  mint from a windows 10 desktop.    The performance and everything works really well.  

 

Problem I am having is I can not get sound to go thru to the windows desktop.   I have tried a number of articles but nothing seems to work.    The VM shows a sound card and when i do test sounds i get no errors or anything.

 

IT does not play sound in the console from xen center either (not that i expected it to)

 

So what is the trick that I am missing to get the sound to play thru.

On your RDP Local Resource Tab under Audio Settings did you set it to play sound

on your local computer ?

Yep had that part covered.

On the Windows 10 box you are RDP'ing to make sure the Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector service is running.

checked and it is running.

If the computer is on a domain it could be a group policy blocking it. Other than that I'm not sure.

its not on a domain so that is not it.  i think i have narrowed it down and its and issue with the VM... its not seeing a sound card.  jsut the dummy output.  tried a few tricks but still nothing.

Yea, I've never tried to pass sound myself. Are you trying with a USB sound card ?

Not sure how that would work with a standard built on sound card, some type

of PCI passthrough ?

i tried 2 USB sound cards.  and a new creative labs sound card.  all of them do not show up on the VM..    but when i do lspci on the hypervisor the old card and the createve labs one all s hows up.    Nothing on the VMs

Sounds like you need to do a pci passthrough so Dom0 releases control and a VM can take control of the hardware.

This is for Xen but principles and some of the commands may work on XenServer.

Or at least give you another direction to try.

Not all devices re supported in passthrough mode. It's pretty much hit and miss. We dealt with thin clients that had their own audio devices that showed up through the VM, however these were Windows 10 devices. I would suspect that support for Linux would be not as extensive.

well i made progress.. now when i am on the host.  I can do a 

xl pci-assignable-list
 and get 0000:01:00.0   wich is the sound card....

 

now to figure out how to get a VM to pick that stupid thing up.
