finding a label of a disk

In our current Xenserver 7.6 environment, I have a machine that was deleted a week or so ago that I need to recover some data from.  We currently snapshot the environment so I can pull back the disk and attach it to another machine.  The problem is we have 4 different storage locations and many disks.  is there a way I can identify the disks since I do not know which UUID I am looking for?

Nope, thats what the metatdata is for. If you labeled your disks which is strongly advised that helps.

If not you will just have to go through by disk sizes and attach/detach until you find what you are 

looking for.

Unless you tagged the storage, as Alan says, it will be a trial-by-error process of conencting the drive to an existing VM and checking it out until you hopefully sort them all out. Good luck! Name labels are very useful and underutilized until you realize you wished you had them.

I think differently.

 

I would look at /var/log/xensource.log and /var/log/SMlog to see which disk was deleted.

Wouldn't that help ?

Thanks...checked the logs and could find the vm….but not the disk associated with it....looks like i will run a compare against my snapshots vs what is in prod now and recover the missing disks one by one.

If you have found the VM , you should be able to find the disk. search for the keywords "vdi" and "vhd" - you should see it.
