BSOD when trying to boot image of Windows 7 VM

Paul Tulloch

I'm trying to recover a Windows 7 VM from an exported .xva from around 2015, that I didn't create. I believe the export came from either XenServer 6 or potentially 6.2. I've tried booting it on both Hypervisor 8, and XenServer 6.2 and in each case I get a BSOD with the stop code 0x0000007B.

I've also tried converting to VMWare and get the same BSOD.

Any ideas about troubleshooting this issue?

You might try to boot the Win7 into rescue mode / safe mode and then remove all Xentools traces, especially the "upperfilter=xenfilt" occurences in the registry (hklm\system\currentcontrolset). I got best results by using RAPR driver store explorer to remove the drivers. If all those drivers are fully removed, it should - in theory - come up with the windows 7 basic drivers for the disks.
