Storefront "Enable Loopback Communication" Broken after renewing SSL certificate

I renewed the SSL certificate on our Storefront servers last night and this caused access to StoreFront to display "Cannot Complete Request" upon checking the logs I can see an SSL error in the logs referencing I have amended the Storefront setting "Enable Loopback Communication" to "OnUsingHttp" which resolves the issue but I can't understand why a change of SSL certificate would cause this issue? I can't understand how would ever work as this would never be a name listed on the certificate? There seem to be a few threads on here but no one has the ultimate answer as to why this changes behaviour?
