CVAD 2203 LTSR lost user session

Dominik Volk

Question

Hello eveyone,

after we migrated our Citrix infrastructure to 2203 LTSR, which in retrospect was not the smartest thing to do, we encounter some issues.

The worst one is that user session sometimes got " lost". This means Studio/Director show no session (not connected) or sometimes as disconnected, but on VDA in task manager the session is listed.

That occurs randomly with no pattern. Most of the time the session got "lost" if a user roam from one device to another.

A typical scenario could be:

  1. user close the laptop, which put it in energy saving mode, while the session was still open (but not necessarily) and maybe disconnect the USB-C docking station
  2. user go to another device, e.g. a laptop/computer in a meeting room, roam its session and work as intended
  3. user go back to its desk, reconnect the USB-C and maybe here the trouble starts. Most of the time the session is not open on the laptop, so the user start as normally by login in to Storefront and start its desktop. Now there are serveral different outgoings:
    • user connect to its old open session. Everything is fine. Before 2203 the was the normal behavior
    • Citrix "lost" the session and start a new one:
      • if user is on FSLogix the user couldn't proceed, because FSLogix can't load the virtual profil disk, as it's already in use by the old session
        • there was this special occurrence where a user was directed to the same VDA as its old session was. So the vhd was loaded to that machine but the session was broken too. the user had indeed two session on the same server
      • if user is on UPM it can logon but the session behave strange. Some settings aren't set, programs doesn't work as expected or maybe the network drives are just gone

Apparently the profile management and the VDA version doesn't matter.

At the moment our environment looks like this:

  • Virtual infrastructure on VMware vSphere 7.0.3 and ESXi server on 6.7U3, 18828794
  • Microsoft Active Directory + DNS + DHCP,  Windows Server 2019
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2016 SP2,  Windows Server 2016
  • Citrix ADC VPX, NS13.0 83.27.nc (used for external connection only)
  • Controller 1, 2203 LTSR, Windows Server 2019
  • Controller 2, 2203 LTSR + license server 11.17.2 build 37000,  Windows Server 2019
  • Storefront 1, 2203 LTSR with Hotfix (CTX399424/CTX457757) + Director 2203 LTSR,  Windows Server 2019
  • Storefront 2, 2203 LTSR with Hotfix (CTX399424/CTX457757) + Director 2203 LTSR,  Windows Server 2019
  • Windows Server 2019 as file server for UPM and FSLogix
  • VDA 2112 with Hotfix (CTX338807),  Windows Server 2019, full non-persistent desktop (production)
  • VDA 2203 LTSR,  Windows Server 2019, full non-persistent desktops (testing)
  • VDA, Storefront, Controller and file server share the same /24-network. Database, Active Directory, DNS and DHCP are localed in another network. Netscaler is placed in DMZ.
  • Deployment of VDA with MCS provisioning
  • most client devices are Windows 10 laptop with CWA installed. we currently updating them to 22.3.41 (2203.1) LTSR

We already opened a Citrix support case with the number #81215318.

If anyone can confirm this or have information / ideas on what causes this issue we would be very thankful.

Kind regards

after being in contact with citrix in several cases, it looks like we have finally tackled the issues. the fixes that work for us:
we are using multi-session OS VDA.

- we had 2203, upgraded all components to 2203 CU1 first.

-on the VDA, add this key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Citrix\Reconnect   FastReconnect=0 (D-word)

-also on the VDA, add this key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Citrix\Ica\GroupPolicy    EnforceUserPolicyEvaluationSuccess=0 (D-word)

Hello Dominik,

we have similar problems and I have asked here in the forum before, which led to us opening a support case.

Others have similar problems if you look for them.

We have not yet been able to find a solution.

Our support case has the number #81177826, created May 2. Work is in progess.

I have problem after logon "the session will be disconnected due to a policy evaluation error. Try to connect again. If the problem persists, contact your administrator. The session doesn’t even start. I get disconnected and then the VDA reboots."

key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Citrix\Ica\GroupPolicy    EnforceUserPolicyEvaluationSuccess=0 (D-word) SOLVED !!!!

Hello Rodszies,

thank you for your feedback on this topic. The problems described with your links also correspond to ours. As far as I know, there doesn't seem to be any workaround or fix at the moment.

Hi Dominik

Just to confirm we are seeing this in our similar environment with Windows Server 2019 & FSLogix & VDA2203. This currently is against DDC’s on 1912 LTSR CU2. It doesn’t happen all the time but we have seen amongst most of our users on Windows 10 clients with CItrix Workspace app.

With regards FSLogix are you using the latest released version? Have you had any indication from CItrix if this will be fixed in the 2206VDA OR 2203 CU1?

Thanks

I have the same issue. It does seem less with the newest 2203 LTSR CU1, but it still is an issue.

The "Remove Lock Computer" GPO is already Not Configured, so that should not be an issue in my environment. (as per CTX330692 (Reconnected session shows as disconnected on Cloud Studio and Monitor in multisession OS))

I recently upgraded every component to 2203 LTSR CU1.

We are using FSLogix for Office365 only.

We have the same issue. Opened a Citrix support ticket.

Built a brand new Server 2019 environment with VDA LTSR 2203 CU1, disconnected sessions don't always reconnect and the session is lost in Director.

I checked the server logs for the lost session and saw a rpm error "Failed to evaluate resultant set of user’s policies. Disconnecting the session for security reasons. The following error occurred: 5." Sometimes I saw RPM errors related to session reliability instead.

Started discussing it in this thread: https://discussions.citrix.com/topic/416254-2203-ltsr-issues

Hi all,

we are facing the same issue with VDA 2203 and now 2203.1 on Server 2019

- Session disconected on VDA

- Session not visible in Studio

Any progess on your side or Support Tickets Number to share?

Maybe one option is to disable Session Reliability and see if that helps.

I was not able to reproduce or force the status but users get from time to time in this situation.

Thank you

Hello,

We are having the same issue. We are using Citix Cloud and our VDA's are running on WS2022.

After some testing we were able to simulate the problem.

When forcing a disconnection the session stays active in the cloud console and on the VDA. So the user is able to reconnect to the same session.

After a second disconnection the session disappears from the cloud console, but is still visible on the VDA. Reconnecting to the same session doesn't work now and the user will get a new session (and temp profile).

In order to get the valid session visible again in the cloud console, we have to restart the Citrix Desktop Service on the VDA.  This way the user will also be able to reconnect to the correct session.

We have a ticket open with this issue at Citrix Support since august.(#81381370).

They now ask us to contact Microsoft ("There are certain API calls from MS during the process that are needed to be called.

If they are not working as expected, Citrix will not function as expected.")
