Linux VVMM boot console options passed to kernel

Jose Ciruelo

Hello there.

We have several SLES 12 >SP4 VVMM running under Hypervisor 8.2. However we have quite a mess on their configuration regarding boot options passed to the kernel. They are repeated several times, in some cases up to 5 times the same parameters. But those regarding swap, console and xencons differ. We have identified those of 'swap' and we are ready to clarify them, but those of 'console' and 'xencons' vary between these two:

  • console=ttyS0 xencons=ttyS
  • console=hvc0 xencons=hvc y2confirm=no

The rest of values are clear and easy to simplify, but these options have us wondering. Which of them is the best option for those virtual machines? We normally do not see much difference between them, some have the fitst one and some other have the second, and they run fine. However we want to unify and optimize.

Those values are going to be set in the /etc/default/grub of each server and we will run 'grub2-mkconfig' so they get fixed next time they boot.
