SR ZFS Snapshot

Riccardo Bicelli

I'm looking for a second option to backup my SRs and adding a second protection layer.

Currently I'm backing up my vms with xenbackup-ng (https://github.com/rbicelli/xenbackup-ng) on a NAS unit.

Since my backend SR is a HA ZFS array wich exports volumes via NFS I would like to take advantage of the snapshot capability of ZFS: using sanoid/syncoyd I would take periodically a snapshot of a volume and send it to my backup NAS.

I'm wondering if it is feasible and what can incur in a restore scenario. I know that a snapshot without the proper quiesce could potentially produce a corrupted drive (it also depends on workload the vm is doing), but in case of disaster I would like to increase the chances of restoring my vms.

What do you think?

I'm also the mantainer of xenbackup-ng script
