CBT Backups - What happens during the CBT call?

Mauritz Swanepoel

Question

I'm hoping my question is in the right forum. I have been working the last couple of months in incorporating CBT backups for our Citrix Hypervisor fleet. I am currently working on a MVP for our internal system and have a question regarding CBT.

CBT must be enabled for all VDI's. I have noted that we have to enable CBT before we take a VDI snapshots. This makes sense. There is however 1 scenario that I am unable to wrap my head around and that is, what happens when we do a CBT enable call? As example, what are the dangers of running the below during each backup cycle?

self.xensession.xenapi.VDI.enable_cbt(self.activeVDI['vdi_ref'])

The scenario we have is that the documentation states that if CBT is not enabled (or was previously enabled and now not enabled), this may be seen as a corrupt SR or that the SR crashed. If I run the above line of code whilst returning all VDIs, I will enable CBT regardless which may override the previously found CBT error. In what events will CBT be disabled?
