App defaults reset on every major windows update. Is that normal?

Darin McClain

Question

Using elastic layers and user layers. When I went from 1909 to 2004, and 2004 to 20H2, my users all experience their defaults resetting. Is that normal?

Like the default browser goes back to Edge, .pdfs open in edge again over Acrobat, photo viewer disappears and I have to use a reg hack to get it back, mail client no longer show outlook, just blank. Stuff like that.

In my case I noticed that after any Major update Windows 10 reset the default apps on the User Layer.

If you have configured the application assignment on the machine then they remain as it is.

Personally I have found a workaround via Powershell to record the User settings and re-assign them.

I (will) enable the script on the next Major update only.

Up to now I have re-assigned applications manually for each user.

Sadly some applications cannot be assigned on a machine basis.

Do you mind sharing your script? I might be interested in trying it out.
