"Provider DLL failed to initialize correctly error" Event Log error with BitDefender AV

Question

We have been running FAS for SSO for some time but we have recently had an updated version of our  Bitdefender AV client (6.6.23.325).  We have just discovered their new 'Advanced Anti-Exploit' module  setting for "LSASS memory access from unknown process" defaults to "Block Process" which breaks the FAS login. Setting this to "Report Only" is the workaround we have for this so far. 

 

In the case of this issue the event log reports the error (ID 5) "An error occurred while retrieving a digital certificate from the inserted smart card. Provider DLL failed to initialize correctly"

 

Took us a while to track this one down so posting in case any others come across this issue.
