MPX 8500 upgrade 12.1 to 13 feedback

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

We have two mpx in an HA pair on prem, currently running version 12.1 55.18nc and would like to move to some version of 13. (we use these for external user connections only)

I see there are numerous updates to version 13, with the latest build released on Dec 16th.

Anyone have any good or bad experiences with any particular build? Sorry for such a broad question just wanted to see if anyone ran into any unforeseen issues.

Hallo Christopher,

Citrix ADC firm-ware has to undergo 3 stages (see https://support.citrix.com/article/CTX241500):

Feature phase: Every new version gets not just bug-fixes, but also some additional new features. This will always bring the risk of bugs, no matter how well they test.

Maintenance phase: No new features, but bug-fixes. These updates don't tend to introduce new bugs. A version will go into maintenance phase after 2 years and will stay in maintenance phase for an other 2 years. Bug-fixes come quite frequently.

End of maintenance phase: The last year (3rd year of maintenance phase) is the last year in the product cycle. Fixes don't come that frequent any more. It's time to think of an upgrade.

12.1 currently is in maintenance phase, while 13.0 is in feature phase. So 12.1 is the more stable version and I tend to use version 12.1. However, 13.0 is very close to end of feature phase, following CTX241500, we expect the first maintenance release in Q1/21. I plan to suggest updating to 13.0 end of Q1/21.

My main concern is the following: Current version 13.0 build 71.40 is rather good, except of some GUI bugs (WAF, AAA). But what about sudden security issues? Citrix would have to release a new build 13.0 and you would have to implement is immediately. Probably this one is not as good as the current one, as Citrix did not have time enough to test it as well as the current one is.  You would need to implement a buggy version.

My suggestion would be: Wait until 13.1 comes out and upgrade than.
