Client Autocreate Printer Issue and then Desktop Session Freezes

Melanie Feagan

Question

Hello!

We just migrated users from: Win 2008 R2 with Citrix XenApp 6.5

to: Windows 2016 with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) 7 1912 LTSR

All client printers are autocreated, as users are remote and not on same network. Most printers use Citrix UPD, but some are mapped to alternate driver.

A handful of users have reported the following issue on the new environment and we have not been able to solve:

User launches virtual desktop. Symptoms they see: not all client printers are created. One or more are missing. Then after 2 or 3 minutes, the desktop session is completely frozen and user is unable to do anything.

Session must be disconnected or logged off from Director.

In Windows Application event log on server where user connects, there are the normal printer creation events, but then this event appears and repeats every minute or two, until the user session is terminated:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        MetaFrameEvents
Date:          12/16/2020 8:50:44 AM
Event ID:      1113
Task Category: Printer Management
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      [citrixservername]
Description:
Printing virtual channel request timed out. The current timeout value is 54000 milliseconds. This timeout is the duration in milliseconds that the Citrix Print Manager Service waits for a response to a printing virtual channel request. This timeout value can be modified by setting the following registry value and rebooting the Virtual Delivery Agent machine. Registry path: HKLM\Software\Citrix\Ica\PrintingSettings Name: PrintRequestTimeout Type: REG_DWORD Data: <Duration in milliseconds>

The end user computers are Windows 10. Printers vary from USB to network, and various models.

If we stop the client computer Print Spooler service and then logon, the session does not freeze.

I worked with a user today and we went through each printer and deleted them one by one to see if it was a specific printer, and still had the issue. The only printer user had that we didn't want to delete was Adobe PDF as user wasn't certain where the software was to reinstall. But another user with same issue did not have Adobe PDF printer.

It's definitely client related. But, users can access the old desktop (Win 2008 R2) and no issues. all printers create and can be used.

Citrix Workspace app is generally 19.12.1000 or 20.x

Any ideas? thanks!

You try this policy Printer driver mapping and compatibility, and prevent unwanted printer to direct in Citrix Session.

How to Prevent Auto-Creation of Specific Client Printers in XenApp 6.0

Printer driver mapping and compatibility

Use latest updated drivers in client machine for printers.

Hi - the default is to auto-create all client printers.

we currently do not create these printers:

Microsoft XPS Document Writer*

Send To Microsoft OneNote*

Snagit*

All others are permitted.

and here are the client printer policies (not including driver mapping policy for select printers)

It is just a handful of users with this issue, out of around 4000.
