BDM and App Layering

Joshua Jordan1709159045

Question

We have a 1912 LTSR environment. We are creating statically layered images with App Layering 2009. These boot fine in test, but in prod we get random failures / hangs on BDM. Appears to be related to the write cache somehow. Upon investigation it appears BDM / App Layering doesn't play well together. We tried changing the SCSI ID of the WC and BDM, but some reading from 2017 suggests you need the WC on 0:0, but will need PXE to accomplish that. As far as I know our dev / test / prod environments match. Also, yes these TDs boot off of a non layered image fine, so the TDs seem fine.

1.) Can you run 1912 PVS TDs with App Layered images with a BDM partition?

2.) If so, what do you need to do to ensure a reliable boot?

Yes - our environment is fully app layered with PVS and we use the BDM partition.  We have a vm template that we use to deploy targets from that has the BDM partition configured in it and when we need more targets we run through the the "Streamed VM setup Wizard" from the PVS console and use this template to deploy additional PVS targets.  We've never seen any issues with booting.   Before we used app layering, we also used the BDM partition and we applied the same logic to our app layered images, nothing has changed in that regard.

So our template doesn't have BDM, and we use Virtual Apps and Desktops wizard. Did you switch to this method to accommodate App Layering, or did you always use it? We tried booting from ISO BDM with no change in results.
