Windows update notifications on Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019 VDAs

Christoph Sinabell

Question

Hi,

I am pretty sure most of you have seen this issue. The blasted Windows update notifications. Regarless of what you set or configure for example:

Computer Configuration | Policies | Administrative Templates |  Windows Components | Windows Update

Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications = disabled

User Configuration | Policies | Administrative Templates |  Windows Components | Windows Update

Remove access to use all Windows Update features = enabled, 0 – Do not show any notifications

They just keep coming back, albeit very sporadically and without being able to reproduce it. You can logon a hundred times to the same server with the same user without getting any notification and on the next logon you the message is poping up again. Just again seen today on Server 2019.

So far the only method to reliably make them go away is to set "Remove access to use all Windows Update features" on machine level, which is OK for provisioned machines but problematic for any natively installed machines as we cannot patch them.

Any suggestions?

Regards
