Can't open PDF and msg files

We have our database system running on one set of servers different from Citrix farm servers that users access from Citrix Xenapp 7.13. This database has pdf and msg attachments that are located on the third set of servers. Our users are unable to open these PDF and msg files when they click on them in the database. They only way they can open these attachments is if they downloaded them on their local drives. Is there a way to open these files directly from the database without the need to download and save them locally? The Citrix servers have Adobe Reader and Outlook installed and published on them, and the default program to open these files is Acrobat Reader and Outlook respectively.  


My research is leading me to believe that this because the database is on one server and the PDF and msg files are on a separate server. But whatever the case may be, the files do not launch from the database when the database is accessed from Citrix. 


We do not use ShareFile.
