Alex Heng

Question

I believe I am not the only one who is facing the issue that Windows Defender service is being stopped / disbaled.

Is there anway that we can go about enabling this?

Current OS - Windows 2012

Tried to edit the registry but to no avail.

Pleae advise.

Thank You

Hi,

Have you tried this?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender

Create a new DWORD DisableAntiSpyware and set its value to 1

OR

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Defender

"Turn off Windows Defender" option and set it to Enabled.

Thanks

Manoj

Hi Alex

yes, i've come across this, but only when upgrading to 7.15 CU5 from an earlier CU

If i do a clean install of 7.15 CU5 Windows Defender doesn't get disabled. I'd spent quite a few hours trying different tings to enable it.

Never managed to get it working. Luckily the customer was rolling out a new AV solution so it didn't matter too much.

When you upgraded the VDA, did you tick 'Optimize performance'?

It gets disabled when you run PVs optimizer. You should be disabling it from image.thumb.png.cce8f69d93e5980ba579e3e8007d35fd.png

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinDefend]

"Start"=dword:00000004   Changed to 00000002

Most of the forum points to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender

Create a new DWORD DisableAntiSpyware and set its value to 1 which is misleading when I back tracked the component disabled by optimizer and viewed defender component it was

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinDefend]

"Start"=dword:00000004   Changed to 00000002

this problem occurs without PvS (or MCS) hence  PvS Optimiser wasn't run. This "feature" for me at least, was purely upgrading 7.15 CU2 (I think) to CU5. Before the upgrade, Windows Defender was running, after hte upgrade, the service was set to disabled, and the service was greyed out so couldn't change the status. spent hours trying everything i could at the time, from GPOs to registry registry hacks. I remember finding an article that pointed to the "Optimize" option available in the GUI during the upgrade to CU5 that was the culprit
