App Layering suggestions for future updates?

Ross Faverty1709158252

Question

Is there a thread/platform for us to make suggestions for future app layering updates?

I have been using app layering for almost 2 years now. We are a mid size engineering firm and our Citrix images are entirely app layered with over 100 app layers spread across 12 production images. The GUI hasn't changed much at all since its launch and as we have scaled I have noticed that there are several small changes/additions to the GUI that would make it more much more seamless.

1. Add a Versions Column to the Layers sub fields (App Layers, Platform Layer, OS Layers).

2.  Integrate the LayerPriority tool into the management console or make it part of the Image template build process.

3. Image Template Properties.  Having the option to sort the "Layer Assignment" entries by Priority, name or size would be a massive help.

4. In the app player properties a table showing the versions and which version was created with what OS Version, Connector and platform layer (if used).

I wonder what changes/updates other users of App Layering would like to see, is there a better way to make suggestions?

I will forward to the PM I am pretty sure he monitors these groups as well.

While we're at it....   Can we have the ability to add comments to the PVS disk in the PVS console when it's deployed from the app layering appliance?  Today we have to remember (or have a checklist) to login to the PVS console and go to versions on the PVS disk and add comments of what was added into the newly deployed image.  It would be super nice if we could do this on the image template before hitting publish.

Are there any plans in the pipeline to improve the GUI for the App Layering console yet?

Over the last year we have scaled up massively and have almost doubled the number of apps and image templates and with that scaling comes the need to better organize and manage all those layers & templates than what the existing GUI can offer.

Some small but massively helpful improvements would be:

4. Being able to export out a list of the applications in an image template or at least copy/paste the table under properties.

5. In an application layer's properties a table showing each version and the OS Version, Connector and platform layer (if used) it was created with.

6. Show the version description for an app or OS layer when needed - as stated previously showing the just the version isn't helpful and requires you to back out from the wizard entirely to go search though your layers.

7. Comments made on published PVS image templated transition over to the PVS vDisk description in the PVS console when published.

Anyone else have any other improvements that they would like to see going forward?

Found this:

https://www.citrix.com/blogs/2021/03/24/citrix-app-layering-whats-new-and-whats-next/

Some bullet points in relation to GUI updates:

-  UI is moving away from Silverlight

-  New UI will be used to manage Image Templates and Application Layers

-  For all other admin tasks (user layers, platform layers, connectors etc...) you will need to use the old Silverlight UI (for now)
               - x2 different UI's accessed via 2 different URL's

- Eventually all management will be under the new UI

No other details at this time.
