Citrix 1912 - User Personalization Layer - Error

Paul Cross

Hi All.

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else has the same issue.

In the latest release of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops I've been testing the PvD replacement User Personalization Layer. All seemed fine till the user logged in and got this error:

The Application Layering drivers found for this system failed.... (see attached UPL - Error)

Working back through the various errors in the logs the problem seems from the OS not trusting the driver used by the App Layering service which in turn causes a cascade of errors.

The cause is because in VMware ESXi 6.7, and probably various other versions, when creating a new W10 VM the default setting for Windows 10 is to use EFI with Secure Boot enabled. When enabled this protects certain parts of the OS. What I suspect is happening is when the VDA is installed it’s preventing the unsigned driver being installed or a bypass added. If you disabled Secure Boot and then install/re-install the VDA all should work fine. Note – in my testing I had to recreate any VMs that had previously been created using the old snapshot. They failed to work even if I manually disabled Secure Boot.

In short – disable Secure Boot before installing the VDA and creating the Catalog. (see attached - UPL - VMware Settings)

Regards. Paul.
