Citrix Provisioning Services - PVS Servers CPU Pegging - Stream Service Process

Douglas Van Apeldoorn

Question

Recently we have had two midday PVS Server "crashes" due to unexpected CPU pegging of our two PVS servers.  The Stream Service Process was the culprit.  Both servers are running Windows 2012 and have been running just fine.  We are NOT running AV on these servers so checking for exclusions is not the cause.  Restarting the Stream Service does not work.  Just goes back to pegging the CPU.  Restarting the servers is the only fix.

Anyone else seen this issue?

Hi, dvan,

One possible cause is some sort of non-transient latency.

Another more likely (and common) cause is the target devices are doing some sort of update on themselves.  They all start doing it at the same time and the sum of all the target devices doing so many writes ends up using all available resources.  Think about something like a Windows Updates policy, or a anti-virus configuration on the target devices that could cause all or or many of the target devices to download one or more large files, or to start scanning their hard drives.

Does it happen to both PVS servers at the same time?  If so, that also points to the target device. (vDisk)   What other symptoms do you see?  Are the retries going up?  Are the target devices frozen?

Hello.

Thanks for the reply.  It does happen on both PVS servers at the same exact time.  The retries look normal.  Target Devices are ok until we begin the reboot of the PVS servers to resolve the CPU spike issue.  Just restarting the Stream Service is not working.  We are not running AV on the PVS servers, but I will check to see if anything is happening on the target devices.  My only question is that it only start happening the day before Thanksgiving, which was the fourth Wednesday of the month, at around 3PM EST.  The second instance was on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, at 11AM EST in the morning.  So both Wednesdays, but different times.  If something was on a schedule, I would think the times, dates, etc. would line up.

Again, thanks so much Sandrabu for the reply.
