Windows Server 2008 R2 with Extended Security Updates (ESU)

Nicola Cocquio

Question

Hi Citrix Community

As you may know EOL of Windows Server 2008 R2 is approaching fast. Microsoft released some technical informationHow to get Extended Security Updates for eligible Windows devices

On-premises customers that purchase Extended Security Updates will receive an add-on Multiple Activation Key (MAK) through the volume licensing portal (VLSC). Customers can deploy the new MAK key and any pre-requisite servicing stack updates to the applicable machines, then continue with their current update/servicing strategy to deploy Extended Security Updates[...]

We are currently using Citrix Provisioning with KMS activation.

Is it possible to add an ESU MAK key to an image with KMS activation?

Will the provisioned servers activate the MAK key each time they start, if Citrix Provisioning is set to KMS activation?

Is there official documentation from Citrix for ESU servers?

Thanks in advance,

Nico

Hi Nico,

do you have already an answer for your question. We are faced with a similar szenario.

For Win 7 ESU you have to activate on the client the license key. In our infrastructure we use also provsioned VDI-clients. The effect from my point of view is, that each time a VDI starts a sysprep is done.

The questions now are:

- Do we have to do this each time after starting on a VDI

- Is it only once per machine 2 do

- Is it only once in general to do? If yes, how act the KMS, when multiple clients at the same time?

Best regards

Volker

Do you have some news or could you gain expirience?

Nothing official.

But other solution providers have updated their guidance on ESU updates: Licensing for Microsoft's Extended Security Update (ESU) for Windows 7 - VMware Knowledge Base

For customers using Linked Clones or Instant Clones, it is less straight forward because the MAK key is device specific and anytime a new clone is spun, a new MAK is needed. There are two workarounds:

Customers can apply a combination of MAK and KMS keys. Here is the recommended approach: on the master image, customers should activate the ESU MAK key and download all updates. Then remove the MAK from the clone as a part of a post-customization script (this script runs before the clone is activated by the agent). After that regular cloning and refresh/recompose will work same as before. New clones will be activated by KMS and they will already have the security updates from master image. Make sure to buy enough ESU MAK keys for the maximum number of clones you will spin up.[...]

I do not know how legal this procedure is, because only one "Master" vDisk has a ESU key activated.
