It also depends on if you are using thin or thick provisioning. With thin provisioning, you can end up using way more storage than you have physically available, by factors of several, even. That's because the amount of storage used is typically a fraction of what is allocated, whereas for thick provisioning it's generally a one-to-one correspondence. If you start taking snapshots, your usage will of course then go up, as well.
