Use Netscaler owned VIP as backend service on same Netscaler

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Is it possible to have a service specify a load balancing vServer VIP on the same Netscaler as server for a backend service? Apparently if you do that the Netscaler doesn't present any error message but you just hangs. On the commandline it gives "ERROR: Address is already in use"

The reason is that we need to specify distinct rewrite polices per backend (two backends currently). So the idea would be that we have 3 load balancing vServers. One sitting in front and the other two each which just one backend service and their own distinct rewrite policies. The one in front would have two services pointing to the other 2 load balancing VIPs.

Right now it seems we need two Netscaler boxes to accomplish this. It seems to be no problem when using iRules on F5.

Regards

What rewrites do you want to perform as there might be away to do it with regular load balancing/services without the two-tier approach.  If we just need to insert the destination service selected, then it might be possible.  (We might have discussed this previously, but doesn't hurt to see if there isn't an alternate way to achieve your desired result.)

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

@Rhonda: We are trying to modify the host field in the header. It should be set to the hostname of the individual backend server.

@Carl: Doesn't work unfortunately. Regardless of approach. Service or ServiceGroup, Server Entry oder directly via IP. The result is always "Address already in use" as soon as you enter or select the IP of an existing LB vServer for a SG or SVC.

I know we could use a backup LB vServer to provide at least some form of redundancy and use spillover to perform load distribution at some fixed point AND rewrite the host headers correctly, but that is certainly not an ideal solution.

I remember the header issue now.  Because rewrite runs before load balancing we have the issue.  I cant think of any way to do the header insertion at the service level.  You might be able to hand off traffic from one lb vserver to another in an admin partition if routable via L3 to do this on a single appliance.    If there is another way to do this, hopefully someone else will comment.
