The device name autodetect is invalid

Filip Fronczak

Question

Recently I had a weird problem with XenServer.

I started to throw an enigmatic error: "The device name autodetect is invalid" when I was trying to import VMs. Toolstack restart was not helping, restarting server neither...

Identical issues have been described here:

For a long time I was not able to find any explanation or solution and finally it turned that it is related with Metadata backups not being correctly cleared and 255 vbds remaining connected to Dom0.

The solution is this command, which will produce as an output the list of vbd-destroy commands to execute:

xe vbd-list vdi-uuid=$(xe vdi-list other-config=ctxs-pool-backup:\ true params=uuid --minimal) params=uuid --minimal | sed 's/,/\n/g' | sed 's/^/xe vbd-destroy uuid=/'

Use mindfully.
