USB/COM port redirection and access to COM port on server WITHOUT ADMIN RIGHTS

Dawid Bbn

Question

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone could help me if it comes about redirecting (from Wyse thin clients to Citrix server) a USB device which is presented to the OS as virtual COM port.

When I connect my USB device to a PC, it is visible as a virtual COM port and the application which communicates with it can see it when started as standard (non admin) user.

However, when I connect the USB Interface to a thin client and redirect it (using Generic USB Redirection with Virtual COM port (VCP) driver installed on server) it works fine but requires the application to be started with elevated admin rights. When the application on Citrix server is started without admin rights, it cannot see the redirected virtual COM port.

Obviously, I would like to avoid giving my users admin access to the servers or using dedicated service account for just one application and reading data from redirected USB Interfaces - could you please suggest a possible workaround?

Please see the attached screenshots of the USB device I am redirecting in both Windows and Wyse client Device Manager.

Windows Server 2012, XenApp 7.15, Wyse 3010 thin client.
