Hostname for LVDA instructions conflicting with MS Dynamic DNS update ( Fails to register DNS entry with Windows Active Directory DNS )

John Salvo

Question

LVDA 18.11

The instructions in here:

https://docs.citrix.com/en-us/linux-virtual-delivery-agent/current-release/installation-overview/redhat.html

... requires that:

1) hostname ( without parameters ) return just the hostname with the domain name

2) /etc/hostname also only shows just the hostname without the domain name

However, doing so will make the RedHat VM fail to update the AD DNS via sssd

.. and therefore, the Linux VM will not have a DNS entry that is running in Windows.

This is illustrated here:

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/jeffbutte/2016/12/18/265/

... where it shows that you have to specify the hostname WITH the domain name for dynamic DNS update with Active Directory.

So therefore, we have conflicting rules on configuring the hostname for Linux VMs

1) On the one hand, Citrix documentation requires that "hostname" and /etc/hostname only show the hostname ... but this fails to register an entry in DNS via sssd.

2) On the second hand, ensuring that "hostname" and /etc/hostname shows the FQDN ( with domain name ) confllicts with Citrix documentation.

What effect / issue is there really to having /etc/hostname and "hostname" command to include the domain name as far as LVDA is concerned ??

OK .. Found the correct solution that works for both LVDA and Dynamic DNS with Active Directory:

1) Follow Citrix documentation on keeping only the hostname ( without domain name ) in /etc/hostname

2) But then, in sssd.conf, add the FQDN of the hostname that you would like dynamic DNS to use with Active Directory ( Example shown below ):

[domain/corp.aal.au]
ad_hostname = aallxppdc001.corp.aal.au

This will then making xdping NOT complain and also make dynamic DNS work with Active Directory.
