Windows Server 2016 not installing on XenServer 7.6

Gintaras B

Question

Hello,

I intend to use and try XenServer 7.6, but have the problem I can not solve...

I try to install Windows Server 2016 Essentials on VM. First step goes OK - it reads DVD or iso, prepares, etc.

Then installation restarts, working and after some period suddenly VM become shut down... If I start it and try to continue

install - it drops the message that suddenly PC was shut down and I must start install from the beginning.

I try: bet BIOS data and not, then 1 core 2 virtual, 1 core 1 virtual, 4 or 6GB RAM, 100 GB disk space.

Made snapshot just before restart and try several times, with SHIFT+F10... nothing helps :(

Then I try to download evaluation iso from M$ and install it - same result.

My physical server Dell T30, 8GB RAM, 1TB, CPU - Xeon.

Any ideas? Thanks!

hello,

today i installed xenserver 7.6 on a supermicro server. after this i installed windows server 2019 essentials. after the installion at the first reboot the vm crash.

it is the same error which is documented in xso-486. installing the both security fixes which are available for 7.6 does not solve updates the problem.

does anybody knows when a new release of xenserver free is availalbe?

Hi, I just thought i would contribute to this discussion with my experience with this issue.

The other day, I migrated virtual machines from Xenserver 6.5 to 7.6 and their Server 2016 Essentials VM failed to boot. Still won't.

I had to install Server 2016 Standard instead to get the remote desktop gateway online.

That was on an ASUS B250M-C/CSM mainboard using an Intel i5-7500 processor.

Now, I've just installed Xenserver 7.6 onto a slightly older generation system and have no problems installing Server 2016 Essentials.

This is a Gigabyte X79-UP4 mainboard with an Intel Xeon E5-2630L.

Cheers

Hmm, I didn't try this. We have an old (12 years old or something like that) server in the lab for testing purposes, and this server is also equipped with a Xeon processor. Windows 2016 Essentials installs just fine on this lab-server also. But... I can't use this server in the production environment, so, to my opinion, the bug still persists. Unfortunately, I need to wait until this issue is solved.

Same problem with two new servers here. Maybe we can switch off a specific cpu feature to get this running?

Maybe... Been looking into it.

Here is the output  of xe host-cpu-info on both of my platforms.

I am not familiar enough with this hardware matter to jump into a conclusion. Has anyone an idea?

Have you tried Hypervisor (XenServer 8.0) yet ? Wondering if the essentials fix has been rolled up into

the latest release.

No, I didn't. I don't want to try it on the production server and testing on the lab-server makes no sense because Essentials is running over there.

Werner.

For anyone still looking for a fix for this...

I have been successful in performing an in-place upgrade of the OS to Standard Edition before migrating the VM.

Plenty of economical digital licences around to do this in a cost-effective way. eBay is your friend here.
