Setting the default browser

Kim Laurits Kristensen

Question

Hi,

I have a new XenApp 7.9 environment and is experiencing a minor issue that I can't solve.

We have installed Google Chrome, since some of the websites that the users are using doesn't work correctly in Internet Explorer.

Then we have a lot of URL's in the start menu - the common links that many users use. The first time a users starts a URL they are prompted for which program that should the file type - this happens for both http and https filetype.

They can choose "Citrix Metaframe Server FTA", IE, and Google Chrome.

I would like IE to be the default browser for all users, so they don't get this prompt, since it could confuse a lot of our users.

But if some users prefer to use Google Chrome as standard browser, that's fine as well.

I figured out that the GPP for file association doesn't work for server 2012R2 or Windows 10.

I noticed this article:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/internet-explorer/ie11-deploy-guide/set-the-default-browser-using-group-policy?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

But the problem is that this way I will for the default file associations for all users - every time.

And I wan't the users to be able to choose their own file associations.

Is there any way at all to do this in server 2012R2?

I found this guide:
http://appsensebigot.blogspot.dk/2015/10/deploying-per-user-file-type.html

But that doesn't work for http and https associations.

Hi,

You can check the registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications]

and

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\RegisteredApplications]

If there are entries of Citrix Metaframe Server FTA and Google Chrome then remove them (backup the registry first).

If there is only 1 registerered application (IE) left for http protocol, it will becomes the default.

Hi Thomas,

Many thanks - that seemed to solve it.

Unfortunately this doesn't work for me on Win 2016, XA 7.14 and non persistent machines.

I always get the "How do you want to open this? message when trying to start a link, with only IE as choice. This happens every time I try to open the link in the same session.

I tried both the "OEMDefaultAssociations.xml" and the "Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations" options, as well as the removal of the values from the \RegisteredApplications] keys.

Nothing works, this is driving me crazy.

I went from XA 7.6 FP3 to 7.6 CU3 and the defaultassociations.xml stopped working for me as well. I get the choice pop-up every login. Citrix really needs to find a fix for this. It causes a lot of problems.

@ Bejamin,  Looks like we have the same setup. 2016 VDA with 7.14.1.  "I tried both the "OEMDefaultAssociations.xml" and the "Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations" options, as well as the removal of the values from the \RegisteredApplications] keys"

At this time, I am still trying to master this. No luck. Anybody from citrix know?

Hi, "OEMDefaultAssociations.xml" and the "Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations" Options doesn´t work for us.

We have tried this:

  • Export RegKey "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open]
@="Open in S&ame Window"
"CommandId"="IE.File"
"MUIVerb"="@C:\\Windows\\System32\\ieframe.dll,-5732"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Citrix\\system32\\iexplore.exe\" \"%1\""
"DelegateExecute"="{17FE9752-0B5A-4665-84CD-569794602F5C}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\command_backup]
@="\"c:\\program files\\internet explorer\\iexplore.exe\" %1"

  • Replace open with opennew

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\opennew]
@="Open in S&ame Window"
"CommandId"="IE.File"

"MUIVerb"="@C:\\Windows\\System32\\ieframe.dll,-5732"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\opennew\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Citrix\\system32\\iexplore.exe\" \"%1\""
"DelegateExecute"="{17FE9752-0B5A-4665-84CD-569794602F5C}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\opennew\command_backup]
@="\"c:\\program files\\internet explorer\\iexplore.exe\" %1"

We set the RegKeys via GPO. This seems to work. We are still testing.
