We have problem with and old 8.2 cluster hosting a very important VM. We didn't had time to migrate this VM to be hosted by our 8.4 cluster.

If I understand correctly another post, after april 15 2026, my 8.2 cluster will be downgraded to a 90 days trial version and will follow working ?

we’ve been troubleshooting a very strange recurring issue in our XenServer + Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops 2402 environment.
Citrix Support is already involved, but we’d like to compare with the community — maybe someone has seen something similar.

Environment Overview Hypervisor:

XenServer 8.4 Premium Edition, fully patched (latest updates)
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen12 hosts (2× Xeon 6517P, 64 physical cores, 768 GB RAM per host)
Pool: multiple Xen hosts (xen1–xen9)

Storage:

NetApp NFS (main datastore)
Additional NFS share to reduce load
Local SSD storage (tested to exclude NetApp) → same behavior

Citrix / OS Layer:

• Windows Server 2022 Datacenter (RDS), fully patched

• Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops 2402 CU3 LTSR VDA

• Citrix Provisioning (PVS) deployment

• FSLogix latest version

• USB redirection disabled for all types except class 8 (mass storage) and 10 (CDC)

• VDA configuration per Worker: 8 vCPUs (1 socket × 8 cores) 80 GB RAM BIOS Boot / I/O optimized / Read Caching enabled

Security & Agents:

• Trend Micro Apex One (OfficeScan) in minimal mode – only real-time scan active

• ControlUp Agent disabled Citrix

• WEM CPU monitoring disabled

⚠️ The Actual Problem

At seemingly random times — typically between 14:00 and 15:00, but not always the exact same minute — several Windows Server 2022 Workers completely freeze.

Behavior:

• The Xen host itself remains fully operational (other VMs keep running normally).

• Only some Workers per host are affected — e.g. 4 to 5 out of 10.

• Affected Workers drop to 0–5 % CPU in XenCenter, as if suspended.

• Ping still works, but: No RDP No ICA/HDX No console interaction (VM appears frozen in XenCenter)

• User sessions freeze on-screen but don’t disconnect.

• After ~15–30 minutes, the Worker recovers by itself, user sessions resume exactly where they left off.

• No BSOD, no reboot, no crash dump, no event indicating restart. This has been happening consistently.

📋 What We’ve Already Tried

✅ All Citrix, XenServer, and Windows updates applied (fully patched stack)
✅ Adjusted vCPU topology to Power-of-Two (8 cores / 1 socket)
✅ Disabled ControlUp and WEM CPU control policies
✅ Reduced Trend Micro to real-time scan only, and even tested fully off → no change
✅ Rebuilt WMI and PDH counters (winmgmt /verifyrepository, lodctr /R)
✅ Tested with Workers on local storage → same issue
✅ Created an additional NFS store → same issue
✅ No scheduled tasks, no backups, no antivirus scans around freeze time
✅ Verified non-paged pool (~5–6 GB, stable)
✅ No disk, NTFS, or storage errors in Event Viewer

🧩 Event Log Highlights (after RDP on an affected Worker and reading the event loggs )

• Citrix Desktop Service 1015 --> Connection to the Delivery Controller was terminated (Keep-Alive request rejected)

• ControlUp AgentMachine 815 --> “CollectingPdhData phase hangs”

• .NET Runtime 1026 --> (BrokerAgent.exe) System.Threading.SynchronizationLockException / thread deadlock

• Tdica 1007 --> Citrix TDICA transport connection closed

• System / DCOM 10010, SCM 7009 / 7036 Service timeouts

• Trend Micro OfficeScan 800 Proxy status updates (nothing critical)

• No disk timeouts, no driver crashes, no “Reset to device” warnings.

📊 Performance Data (from XenCenter & ControlUp)

• CPU Usage: drops to ~1 % flat line during freeze

• During the freeze window, CPU activity collapses while paging operations and disk queue depth rise sharply,

Has anyone else running XenServer 8.4 with Windows Server 2022 VDAs experienced this kind of VM-level freeze (ping OK, but entire OS hung for 15–30 min)? Or can anyone here give us some hints we might be missing?

It does not go any further with the install from there. I had it running for 4 hours on that message. Any advice will be highly appreciated.

What is the best way to upgrade from XS 7.5 to 8.2. can i use the rolling pool method or does each host have to be upgraded / re-installed from the iso ?

i seem to be finding contradictions from its either possible to a need for a fresh install.

would appreciate any thoughts, and potential Gotchas

However, only the booting message appears and hangs.
The R350 server only supports UEFI boot.

1. I tried installing the iso file through virtual media.
2. I tried installing with the iso file of virtual media through the lifecycle controller.
3. I made a Xenserver 8.2 USB and tried to install it myself.

R350 server CPU is intel xeon E-2324g (Rocket Lake).

Is it because the CPU model is too new?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have done this multiple times with success but suddenly it has started failing. The exported XVA file comes from a 7.6 enviornment but the process has never before failed.

Not sure if this is a Citrix issue or related to something else on the network.

Will the 2008 R2 machine RUN under 8.2? If not, what is the latest version that supports 2008 R2? And what should the upgrade path look like once we restore the 2008 R2? We are thinking server 2019 or later as the target system.

This is regarding miration of VM from VMWare VSphere to XenCenter 8.2.

We did export of SLES15SP3 and tried to import the .vmdk Files in XenCenter. After some struggle we could atleast import the VM and initiated the boot. But the Linux did not boot properly and landed in Rescue mode.

Does that mean the difference between sda disk and xvda Disknames plays a role here?

What are we supposed to take care of in order to make the VM bootable?

Scenario is

I have pool with 5 server's  allocating license from windows citrix license server and its perfectly working fine.

I am trying to point this pool to new license server that is virtual appliance but license allocation not happening.

There are 2 disabled VMs and one running Windows Server 2008 R2 with email server. I guess their up to date FortiGate keeps it running away from exploits...

It's an SMB that isn't very keen on spending any money and wants that local mail server...

I don't know what I'll do yet (migrate to something newer, maybe convince them to external mail...) but from what I gathered if that server shuts down, that VM wont boot up due to expired license, which is too old to be renewed.

I backed up XenServer and VM snapshot, but it won't be this week until decisions, perhaps purchases and setting up something new completes - by that time I don't want to sit on this ticking bomb which won't boot up if something happens, and which sooner or later I'll probably want to reboot to do something. I did read about back dating but I find it risky with mail server.

Having some experience in quick and flawless XenServer upgrades I'd try to upgrade it to a version where I can at least freely reboot the VM, but what would be the upgrade path?

From what I know there's no upgrade from old Citrix XenServer to newest hypervisors which don't support these CPUs nor 2008R2 anyway.

XenServer 7.6 seems to be the last free which would support such an old system? But will the free license accept 2 sockets? And is free license for such an old version acquirable yet?

Maybe upgrading to something older would be more hassle free/safer? But which version to choose?

VM : Windows Server 2019 Standard

GPU : NVIDIA A10-12A

While powering on this VM getting "An emulator required to run this VM failed to start".

I've other workload VMs with same configuration working fine and no issues while powering on/off.

Any help would be appreciated, i need to bring that VM up.
