  • Providing a Custom Logout Page for a Full VPN NetScaler Gateway Connection

This post has come about as a direct result of a discussion in the Networking SIG forums and this is great!  The whole idea of this is to provide a go-to place for Citrix Networking and in particular the Citrix NetScaler product.  Being able to write something that I know will help someone directly in the SIG is great, so here goes.

This article will describe the process for setting up a Custom NetScaler Gateway Logoff Page that your users will be redirected to when they establish a full VPN session using your gateway.

First thing you will need to do is set up your new virtual directory on your Citrix StoreFront Servers.  This article is assuming that you are going to host the log out page on your existing Citrix StoreFront servers.  This does not have to be the case; however, it's sometimes just easier and you probably don't want to put a whole new server up there just to handle the log out function.

NOTE:  If you are using Citrix NetScaler to load balance your StoreFront servers (as you should be!) then be sure to set up the virtual directory on ALL of the StoreFront servers otherwise you may bet on getting the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error.

    Configure IIS

So, on your StoreFront servers, log into the IIS Management console and create a new Virtual Directory and set the root path to something like C:\inetpub\wwwroot\vpnlogout.

Putting the files in this directory will ensure that the users have access to read the web page and will make sure you don't have to re-permission the NTFS directory.

Once created, set the home page for the Virtual Directory to index.html.

Create a new file in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\vpnlogout called index.html and paste the below code into it.

Congratulations, you are now connected to the Network via VPN. Please leave this page open or add it to your favourites so that you can successfully logout when finished

    Log Out

NOTE: This is a BASIC page.  I would highly reccommend putting together a page that looks nice and is branded to your coorporate needs rather than just a text only page, trust me - it looks a lot nicer!

    Configure NetScaler

Next you will want to configure your NetScaler Gateway to use the logout page as a home page for the VPN Session Policy.

Login to your NetScaler and locate the session profile for the VPN session policy.

Click on the Client Experience Tab and set the Home Page to your new page hosted on your StoreFront Servers.

And that's it.  Next time your users log in and connect to a full VPN, they will see a page that displays the option for them to log out.  No more need to use the receiver icon to close the NetScaler Gateway VPN session.

Hope this helps some of you out.
