As we have announced here on the Citrix Blog ( still no Press Release though ...
) we are actively developing a Citrix Receiver for the iPhone that will bring the world of millions of Windows apps and developers to the iPhone. As part of our testing and demonstrations we are looking for examples of compelling applications that will not run natively on the iPhone, however if the app was hosted on XenApp and delivered to the iPhone it would provide a great visual example of the power of Citrix and the iPhone.
Some things that come to mind are;
- Web sites that require flash
- Medical Apps
- Web apps that need IE
- Cut & Paste ( within Citrix sessions )
- ?
We have received great feedback and use case descriptions on the original post ( keep that coming ) now we are looking for specific apps or new ideas that would really open eyes to the possibilities.
Thanks !

I am however wondering, is the focus on the app reciever for iphone becoming to much? are you guys forgetting the new devices like the HTC Touch HD, almost same size and make up as the iPhone, but with windows mobile.. will there be a just as cool reciever for that?

Rene, I've got some calls out to HTC and our friends at MS to try and get a loaner Touch HD so we can put it through it's paces like we did with the Touch Pro. Touch HD is only available on you side of the pond at the moment, but maybe I'll get lucky and get a late XMAS gift from HTC or MS early next year. I agree that it could be a very compelling device with its SVGA resolution. What I'm still looking for is the Touch HD with a pull out keyboard

I will see if a Touch HD lands under the christmas tree, and will test it from there
Still hoping for an iPhone, but i think it is extremely important to remember a strong focus on the Windows Mobile Platform Client as well, as it will no doubt win greater impact on the enterprise market than the iPhone will.. i base that purely on the many companies with a "Microsoft Strategy".

I know that the browser currently has a major issue when working with Class 3 Type SSL Certs from VeriSign. Like most companys that have sensitive data need to have it encrypted and use SSL certs. So until the browser starts to work with VeriSign it is hard for me to even begin any kind of testing.

I'm positive that the inability to quickly read text on the screen without lots of scrolling will not at all increase our rate of preventable medical mistakes.
Sarcasm aside, please: focus on fixing your existing products, not adding a mostly useless feature to what is almost definitely not an enterprise device.
The iPhone cannot provide anywhere near the same user experience as a desktop PC. Unless you have some way to make a native Windows app act like a native iPhone app, you can expect zero adoption in healthcare (and probably in most other industries).

When a vendor makes a clear statement that you have to have 1024 x 768 to run their app, displaying it at 320 x 480 could open you up to a world of hurt. I'd be interested to see what the lawyers might have to say.
Still change brings opportunity, so for vendors who can customize apps to fit to this format I'd expect plenty of opportunity.

Regarding viewing apps that were designed for 1024x768 from the iPhone, it is true that panning/zooming will be required but the iPhone gestures make that less painful than ever ( almost fun .. ).
Your comment about making a windows app behave like an iPhone ( or any mobile ) app is insightful, we plan to provide examples of how that can be done including adjusting for the smaller 480x320 screen. The beauty of this solution is that ISV's ( or internal developers ) can make small modifications to existing apps that could work for many mobile platforms and be delivered via XenApp & existing Citrix infrastructure. These mobile app versions could provide limited functionality targeted at the mobile use case and allow one click access to the full version as required.

That aside, while I don't want to be caught between the irresistible force of our physicians and the immovable object of out lawyers I fully expect to see a massive demand from our docs and can see rich opportunities here for whoever is able to accommodate them.

The clamour is all for the iPhone, but they need reachback to Windows applications and the NMCI, which is the only show-stopper.
A Citrix App for the iPhone is the ONLY missing link between us purchasing 5000 iPhones vs. us purchasing
5000 OQO and or Panasonic U1's. If you can get something to us to test within the next two weeks, we still may
be able to include iPhones as part of our pilot test for a mobile solution for Navy Recruiters. We already have a Citrix reachback solution for
desktop, so as of this moment, the only option is Windows... and we all know how cool that is (NOT!). Please hurry, I mean I'm already
using thin client apps (RDesktop and VNC) on the iPhone with great success and usability...now we just need an enterprise solution from
Citrix!

We use citrix on over 1000 pc's here at this hospital and to have support for the iphone would be huge. I know for a fact our hospital would jump all over supporting this. It was brought up in the past as a possibility. I hope there is an update soon. I would love to beta test this application since I am very familiar with citrix and the inner workings of the iphone. I have been using apps on my iphone since long before the 2.0 firmware.
PLEASE release a beta! I can beta test it on my phone before it is even sent to the app store for approval if you want. If interested please send an email to mjmuse @ winhosp . org (please excuse the spacing I am cautious about spam at work, there are no spaces in the email address)
I am a pc support specialist and think I would make a perfect candidate for beta testing.
Thanks for your time.

nation by many hospitals. Epicsystems is also partnered with Citrix. Having an Epic client available for the iPhone/iPod touch would be of
immense value. Having patient information now requires access to a PC or laptop through Xenapp to access the Epic application. If
physicians could access Epic from their iPhone remotely it would help them make better and quicker clinical decisions which would improve the care patients are receiving.
I can say that if you get Epic working through the iPhone /iPod touch you will be creating a MONSTER because so many
hospitals and physcians will want this.

I know of at least 6 400+ bed hospitals that use EPIC (and there are many more) and at all of them I would say at least 30% of the physicians use the iPhone. I would think in the range of 10,000 users and this would be conservative given my limited universe of training.

First of all, many major hospitals use EPIC and as has already been said, many doctors are using the iPhone now. Second, at my major academic hospital we already use Citrix to log into Epic from home and onsite so it seems a natural extension. Third, it would be amazing to be able to see your patient lists, labs, VS while on the fly rather than having to log into a desktop. Even cooler would be if new lab/consults/imaging notifications could go to your phone. Instead of having to log in every 15 minutes to see if that one lab you need before going home/discharging the patient/going to the OR is back, you'd be alerted on your phone.
To those who mentioned not wanting their 1024x768 EMR on a tiny screen are missing the point. We wouldn't want to replicate the same enviroment, but rather just the data, which Epic seems already built for. Most EMRs are poorly designed from a visual standpoint anyway as they seem to be designed not by the people who use them. I just need a list of vitals or labs, not some fancy coloring.
