No doubt you have heard about the iPad by now and you may be already pondering whether or not you will be buying one. Chances are you have a Laptop or PC and a Smartphone already so you need to rationalize how you will use it beyond e-books and browsing. Well if your company has XenDesktop or XenApp you will be happy to know you will be able to use your iPad for real work as well. It turns out the 9.7 inch display on the iPad with a 1024x768 screen resolution works great for a full VDI XenDesktop. Windows applications run unmodified and securely in the data center, and even multiple applications at once. The advancements that were made for the Citrix Receiver for iPhone will carry over to the iPad, however the iPhone restrictions of screen size and small keyboards are overcome with the iPad. It's a beautiful thing ! The iPad looks to be an ideal end point device that can empower users to be productive were ever they are and IT will be able to safely deliver company hosted virtual desktops and apps without worry.
So tell us if you want Citrix Receiver for the iPad and let us know how your going to put it to work. ( even it's just to rationalize buying another gadget
)
Learn how to make the iPad work for your organization at Citrix Synergy.
Update : The Citrix Receiver for iPad is now in the App Store !
Let us know how you plan to use it for work and win an iPad , learn more.

I would absolutelty like the Citrix Reciever specifically for the iPad. The iPhone is great, and I have one now, but this would be in another league. The ability to run the iPad as a thin client for XenApp/XenDesktop would make me consider purchasing the iPad.

4. As stated above, it is easy to compare iPad to a thin client, It's not. The iPad is so much more. Many portable computers are used mostly for presentations, and with the iPad's capacity to plug into external displays, combined with the ability to run Windows applications, suddenly I can buy cheaper iPads for my clients rather than more expensive notebooks. For students, it means a highly portable device with good battery life that does everything they need, cheaply.

Many EHR (electronic health record) applications have developed stylus-driven interfaces for slate PCs (tablets with no keyboard option), so touch interface is a natural easy win for those already developed applications. Many of the EHR applications are also already deployed via Citrix, so this is a serious WIN WIN for Citrix to pursue... and as you mentioned, Citrix has already done quite a bit of work on the Citrix Receiver for the iPhone. This really does have so much more capability, now that you have the larger screen.
Also, multi-touch is supported in Windows 7, so it will be interesting to see how the XenReciever can interact with the Win7 host operating system environment, or even hosted application environment, but having the Receiver bridge that gap in the user experience via the iPad would be amazing!
Thanks

The iPad takes up little space in a briefcase, and, unlike smart phones, the screen is big enough to read even letter-sized documents.
Unlike a multi-use laptop where documents can easily get misplaced, it could be dedicated to that one purpose, with software that takes care of prioritizing and managing the flow of documents in and out. With the 3G model, work could go on almost anywhere. Easily held in the hand and with a fifteen-second startup time, even a few minutes in a cab or waiting in line at an airport could become productive time.

(Electronic Health Record). The fact is that there is way too much typed information for this thing to work for us. The keyboard that apple sells is only for portrait mode at this time. Without that, the onscreen keyboard would take up too much space for data entery. We would have to scroll around in a zoomed in portion of the screen, just like the iphone does now. It will work fine for all our point and click applications but not where text input is still needed.
I still encourage the development of this with all my heart but I don't see how we can practically use it until they develop a physical keyboard that will support rotation (portrait & landscape).

Yes / no: If we use a bluetooth keyboard now we can't just leave the keyboard in exam rooms (the ideal situation). We would have to pair it with the iPad and tote it along with it. If someone develops a portfolio that has a BT keyboard that will also hold the iPad so they kind of become a laptop with keyboard then I bet it would work (kind of like the lenovo U1 seen at CES). We will just have to see how accessory manufactures work this out. In this configuration though, I'm back at looking for a netbook / smartbook (like the lenovo skylight) since it would be less clunky. I've constantly been looking for something very thin & light with enough resolution (1024 x 768), but we still need a keyboard.
Do you know of any other very thin / light with keyboard citrix thin client that are netbook-like with good resolution if at least 1024x768?

Me too had been looking forward to a suitable combination for quite some time. If Citrix can apply them with XenApp, my company might use it for Aviation work for realtime reading of aviation manual anywhere in hangers/docks for works purposes. The reasone why most mobile PC are not possible is due to the battery life are short compaired to IPad which might last 10 hrs. Further to some extend IPad are neither bulky or heavy.

This is a great idea and one which I wondered about when I first saw the iPad demo. I would love this at work but they would never go for it (at least not in the near future). I am curious though if you have any plans or have even considered adapting this to the home? The iPad is very much marketed as a consumer device as opposed to an enterprise one (though your offering will change that). I envision that you could build a similar solution through Windows Home Server. Have you considered a home solution and what are the chances?
Thanks,
Jason

The only thing I wouldn't recommend is applications that require precision and a high number of colors displayed, such as Photoshop.
Any idea if I could play a movie (that is not in a format supported by the iPad) on the iPad using the Citrix receiver? Besides the bandwidth issues, how good/bad is the quality?
Thanks,
Fred

If the IPAD can emulate a tablet effectively, and Citrix runs without an issue, our next concern would be how do the doctors transfer their session to a desktop without too much of a headache. I understand workspace control would work, however I would like to see a total desktop replacement with the IPAD. I know that is out of the scope of Citrix, but I know alot of you are in the healthcare field and would like to voice your opinion here.

Another tip would be that if you have set up the b/t keyboard & then decide you want to use the virtual keyboard for any reason, you just push the eject key on the b/t keyboard. I have only seen this working on the Apple b/t keyboard, but I assume it will be the same with other brands as well.

I don't want to use Citrix in an enterprise setting (though I've used it before and loved it).
Now, with the iPad, I want to use it just to run/access my pc on my home wireless net.
I've installed the Citrix Receiver app on the iPad, but what do I need on the PC (Win 7) to make this work?
Can it work? Will it work with Go To My PC, or does such a setup require enterprise-level Citrix (at which point I'd have to pass.)
Suggestions, please?
Thanks in advance!

I too would like to know this; my company uses, I believe, Citrix Presentation Server; it is not called XenApp or Xen Desktop; when I log onto my company's site, it directs me to the citrix site to download programs that work beautifully with my MacBook Pro and my Windows netbook, but obviously the only program I see for iPhone/iPad is Receiver. I cannot get Receiver to work with my company's programs (Epic EMR) and my IT folks tell me that they can't/don't plan on supporting Receiver. So will there be a workaround to let those of us using prior Citrix software utilize our Apple mobile devices? Thanks in advance for any info.

If you are planning on using the iPad as a Thin Client terminal, think again. It has the coolness and the "wow you could actually get apps running on this thing" factor, but most apps are just tricky to use. Also If you are doing this you will be getting the external keyboard to do any serious typing. Problem with the keyboard is that alot of the functionality is not there. You can't Tab around to different fields on a web form, or sections of an application etc. Even the arrow keys (Up, Down, Left, Right) don't work for scrolling for example. Things like right clicking, resizing windows and precise mouse click operation are not easy or impossible.
With that said, this is probably not the fault of Citrix, but rather the iPad's lack of mouse support (If a mouse were possible, the iPad could have been a phenomenal Thin Client Device).
I do believe something can be worked such as a pointer device that turns the iPad's screen to a mouse type device. Logmein ignition does this pretty well, and Wyse's Pocket cloud also has a nice mouse "emulator" in their program. Too bad Wyse's Pocket Cloud does not have support for ICA.
But hey, this receiver is 1.0, lets give Citrix a chance and see where they get with the next releases.
