Citrix Receiver for Windows Mobile Installation

Citrix Receiver for Windows Mobile Professional can be downloaded from the download section of www.citrix.com. It is found in the WinCE/PocketPC Clients section. There are a few different ways to install the Citrix Receiver for Windows Mobile.

The Citrix Receiver for Windows Mobile device is only a few megabytes and takes about 1 minute to install. Refer to the section below for some help on determining the best method for your installation.

Getting Started and Tip&Tricks

Choosing the correct download

There are 3 download section on the dowload page (All Processors, ARM Processors and ARm4I Processors). Most of today's Windows Mobile Professional devices fall under the ARM Processors category.

Under the ARM Processors section, you can choose the prefered language and download either a .cab or .exe installation package. The easiest method is to download the .cab file right from your devices browser and select "open" once the .cab file has been download. More information below:

Download/Installation choices:

Download directly to the device

As mentioned above, the easiest and first method you should try when installing the Citrix Receiver for Windows Mobile devices is to download the .cab file directly to the device. To do this:

  • Open the device's browser and navigate to Receiver for Windoes Mobile download page.
  • Select the Download button for the ARM .cab file.
  • The .cab file should start downloading to your device. When complete, you will be prompted to "Open", "Save" or "Cancel". Select "Open" and the installation of the client will start.
  • You will be prompted for the location to install the client, select "Device" and click the "Install" button

Installation Instructions:

  • Accept the license agreement, and the installation will start.
  • You may be prompted to install a few components related to the Citrix Receiver, accept all of the prompts.
  • Once the install has completed, you can select the "OK" button on the device to close the installation.

If the version of the browser on you mobile device has issues correctly rendering the download page at com, you can also try the following URL: http://winmo.citrixmobile.com/Citrix/Scheduler/wmDownload.htm.

Download to Your PC

You can also download the .cab to your PC or download the .exe to your PC and use ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center to perform the installation via the .exe package.

If using the .cab file:

  • You can download the .cab file from the site mentioned above and save it to a directory on your PC.
  • Attached your mobile device to the PC and allow AcitveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center to establish a connection to it.
  • You can then use the File Management functionality to copy the .cab file from the PC to the mobile device
  • Ensure you remember the location that you saved the .cab file in on the mobile device.
  • Use File Explorer on the mobile device to open the .cab file
  • Follow the Installation Instruction listed in the section above.

If using the .exe file:

  • You can download the .exe file from the site mentioned above and save it to a directory on your PC.
  • Run the downloaded .exe file by double clicking it.
  • After you have followed the installation instruction you are presented with, attach your mobile device to the PC and allow AcitveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center to establish a connection to it.
  • It should prompt you that new programs are ready to install or Programs management section of the application to install the Citrix client on your device.
  • The installation of the Citrix client should start on your device, and follow the Installation Instructions above (from the Download Directo to the Device section of this page).

Connecting to XenApp

Once you have installed the Citrix Receiver for Windows Mobile devices, your mobile device is ready to connect to Citrix XenApp and use the published application on your mobile device via Web Interface. If this is the first time you are using the Receiver on your mobile device, you may want to connect it to your wireless LAN network and use the internal Web Interface URL, being there may be subsequent steps to enable your device to access the XenApp server from the internet via an SSL/VPN.

We recommend you review the following sections for more tips&tricks to help you tune the experience, and learn how to configure the client for use with XenApp Plugin (PNAgent). Subsequent sections also cover topcis around use of Citrix Access Gateway and Secure Gateway to provide secure SSL/VPN connectivity for your mobile device, which is required for access from an internet connection.

Also bookmark this section for upcomming information on how to access the Citrix Cloud demo center for an easy way to connect to a XenApp demo environment in the future.

    Hi there,
I saw you release Citrix Receiver for Windows Mobile version 11, but there is no documentation, no change log, nothing about new features and about support for new hardware (G-sensor??). Furtheremore is seems it doesn't work properly on my HTC TP2: opening the browser for on http://localhost for configuration it does not open any page!
Is there any blog post I'm missing?

    Cheers

      Hi FD,

The 11 release was really more of a clean up release. The Web based config UI was simplified (a lot of legacy options removed) and re-branded to the newer look. Unfortunately you don't seem to be able to see it It's possible that you have installed another app that is colliding with http://localhost. I have a TP2 and it's working fine, but you may what to try and extend the URL to http://localhost/main.htm. Assuming Opera is you default browser, you may also want to try the IE browser with the same URL. Let me know if this doesn't help.

We do not support detection of the G-sensor, YET. There is a subsequent release being discussed that would add a lot of new "modern" features to the WinMo Receiver. Nothing formally approved yet so no dates or commitments. But hopefully we can bring the usability of the WinMo Receiver closer to that of what we did with the iPhone.

You will also want to have a look at the keyboard tip at the bottom of HTC Touch Pro Ready Today. You'll need to do the same changes to the TP2 to get the keyboard to work with the session.

Does this V11 WinMo Receiver work on a Samsung Blackjack 2 running Windows Mobile 6.1? The about screen says I have an ARM processor, but the cab file won't install - it says it is not intended for this device? Any thoughts?

      Hi Jeff,

The Windows Mobile Receiver only supports Professional, touch screen, devices. The Blackjack2 is a WinMo Standard device, no touch screen support. So unfortunately, it is not supported on the Blackjack2. I just checked out download site, and it looks like we forgot to add this requirement on the download page. We'll be sure to up date this quickly.

I've seen some different redirections of local host on a few of the newer browsers. I have a Touch Pro2 from, but I believe the Tilt2 has WinMo 6.5, correct? You may also want to enter file://localhost/Program%20Files/Citrix/main.html if http://localhost is getting redirected to the internet.

Note that main.html is really only used for configuration, and if you use Web Interface, you don't really need to touch main.html if you want to run with the defaults.

On a device like the Tilt2, you might want to look at the below links as well:

http://community.citrix.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=26542426, make sure you set you web interface sessions settings to "full screen" with this setup as well.

Note you'll need to ensure that you're admins have configured your Access Gateway SSL/VPN so you can securely access the back end Citrix Servers.

If they haven't configured the SSL/VPN for use by mobile devices yet, you might try the demo site in the mean time, http://citrixcloud.net.

    Hi,
I just installed Citrix reciever on my HTC Pro 2 with Windows Mobile 6.1 and I am able to successfully connect to Citrix sessions without issue. This is awesome because I can do a lot of things on the go that I had to do stuck at a desk.

My only problem is that my keyboard entries are not going through. My touch screen clicks are going through fine. I can launch an application and perform all the tasks that would be done via mouse but any keyboard input is not being transmitted.

Is there something in the settings that would block keyboard input but would allow mouse clicks?

Also you guys might want to add that the .exe file on this sight is not digitally signed and that some windows mobile devices will not install without that present. As a workaround I had to make a registry change that by passed the certificate check.

    Hi Adam,
you were talking about an upcoming release of a new receiver. I think that all of the WinMo users would like to see it and to have some more feature on the Receiver:
    1) Touch friendly user interface
    2) Multiple account support
    3) Access Gateway (Standard/Advanced/Enterprise) direct support
    4) multi-language keyboard support (incl Fn+Sym)
    5) better zoom (like zoom bars or the new pinch on HTC Leo's)
other than supporting the new hardware.
I have to admit that Citrix did a really great job with the iPhone Receriver.

Can you give as any news and/or any forecast?

        Hi Francesco,

The good news is that we are now looking at the use of Citrix as a larger mobility play, consisting of having the right receiver for the key platforms our customers are interested in. So when you see new features added to one mobile platform, you can be pretty sure that there is a list somewhere that includes adding this type of feature on the other platforms. Bad news is I can't give you any firm roadmap data.

For WinMo, I can say that a new receiver will be out soon, and the focus of this release is on what we call Post-Launch. Post-Launch = the experience presented to the user after the app is launched from the server. So the Web Interface and PNAgent UX is pretty much the same, but the way you interact with the application being delivered will be vastly improved over the really old look and feel in the current version.

Follow http://community.citrix.com/display/xa/Citrix+Receivers+for+Mobile+Devices and http://community.citrix.com/display/xa/Citrix+Receiver+for+Windows+Mobile+Devices for info on this area. You'll see a list of new topics we plan on working on to help your mobile deployments. And you may see a sneak peak video on the WinMo page later this will showing some of thew Post Launch UI

          Thanx Adam for you reply.
I understand Citrix has a strategy behind this and that you cannot disclose it, and I do not want to bore you, but I think the user interface is really important. It is not only matter of look&feel, but it is about usability.
Right now when I want to show the Recevier for WinMo to one of my Customer I have to:
          1) open Opera Browser o PIE and navigate to the address (or the fav)
          2) I'm using a private CA, so having imported the root CA on my system, PEI recognise the certificate, Opera does not and prompt to accept the certificate.
          3) On the CAG web login page I have to write my credentials
          4) If using a CAG Standard, I have to select I want to open the XenApp Web Interface
          5) the Web Interface does not recognise my device and start autodetecting the client, and I have to manually skip the client detection
          6) at this point I can select and run my Apps & Desktops

On the iPhone it is just a little bit easier:
          1) you run the Receiver
          2) you select the account
          3) run the application

It means you need half of the steps and only 3 touches. I think this is a great advantage. Further more it comsumes less bandwith (that means it is cheaper and faster) to start and application.
I obviously welcome any post-launch improovement

Anyway, I wish to thank you very much for the great job you and your collegues are doing and for keeping us up to date.

Thanks for the input again Francesco. We fully agree with your points above. Part of the plan is to get incremental updates out more quickly, and not make our users wait until we have everything updated.

Have you tried the demo environment we have that you can register for at http://citrixcloud.net ? This should make for an easier demo to get things started, you can even have you customer get their own demo account if you want. For demo's what I do:

    1) bookmark the link to the demo Web Interface, http://demo.citrixcloud.net
    2) The demo is not behind a CAG, so no Certs
    3) Autodetection is disabled on the demo, so you go right to the mobile WI UI
    4) run the apps

You can also configure the PNAgent interface to point to the demo setup, demo.citrixcloud.net, this allows you to :

    1) Open the Receiver
    2) a list of you apps are shown
    3) run the application

Note that this will work for the demo, but will not work with your setup, being the existing PNAgent design on WinMo will not work through a CAG (WI will work), similar to the early versions of iPhone and current version of Android (Android soon to be fixed).

But again, agree with your comments and we are working to achieve the same level of usability across all of our Mobile Receivers. Just a matter of time and resources.

Would also be good to share they types of opportunities you see with WinMo and customers. We get a lot of feedback on the iPhone given how popular it is in the market, but get much less feedback on use of WinMo. Can you share the type of opportunities you see with WinMo to help us prioritize. If you're more comfortable, you can email me at adam.marano@citrix.com

    Thanks,
    Adam
