Hi XenServer Community,

Some things strike me as common sense. Here are some personal recommendations for VM best pracitices ...

1. No screen savers (however still good to lock virtual screen).
2. No power saving (i.e. turn monitor off after 20 mins).
3. No defragging VMs at the same time. Defragging is a process of a physical disk.
4. Schedule antivirus scans (bad to have 30 VMs in one SR doing intensive I/O at the same time).

Regards,
James Cannon

James - question regarding the scheduled AV scans - wouldn't scheduled scans be bad, and add a sudden load to your PVS server in a XD environment? I thought I have seen it said elsewhere to disable scheduled scans in such a scenario, on-the-fly scanning being the lesser of the two evils. Thoughts? Thanks for your post!

      Hi Pete,

You're right about PVS environments. The problem I have seen is a blind schedule (defaults?), where antivirus scanning is happening at the same time. In private image mode, you would want to do a complete scan. Imagine having a trojan horse doing a full recon on your environment.

You do want antivirus in a non-PVS environment. I think most people would want to have the AD, Exchenge, and SQL servers protected.

Let common sense dictate what should be done best. Things in a physical environment don't always translate to a virtual environment.

Hi James. I was just exploring the adjacent subject ( as I want to install a 3D Desktop, but still thinking on pros and cons) . Thanks for your tips, they are really good to use and simple to remember  . Besides, I just came across a video about VMware best practices  on the web. It seemed interesting to me, so  I hope the readers will find it useful.
