As announced on August 31st, HDX 3D for Professional Graphics is now available for download. There's also lots of great documentation on HDX 3D Pro Graphics now on our Support site (scroll down to the bottom of the Product Documentation for XenDesktop 3 page). Or if you are just looking for a high-level overview, be sure to visit hdx.citrix.com.

Here are some highlights of this new XenDesktop feature:

  • Supports the delivery of 3D professional graphics applications, both OpenGL and DirectX based, which need graphics hardware (GPU) acceleration for optimal performance.
  • Works as an add-on to XenDesktop 3 and XenDesktop 3 Feature Pack 1.
  • Automatically adjusts compression based on bandwidth and available resources. Delivers full HDX user experience on a LAN (100 Mbps) and very usable, interactive experience over a WAN (2 Mbps or above, with up to about 200 ms roundtrip latency). Makes desktop virtualization viable and practical for design engineers, architects, and other professional graphics users.
  • Supports high resolution monitors (e.g. 1920 x 1200). For best results over limited bandwidth WAN connections, resolutions of 1280 x 1024 or below are recommended.
  • Provides a real-time image quality configuration tool with an easy way to switch between a sharper image or smoother motion (great when working on  a limited bandwidth connection).
  • HDX 3D host workstation (e.g. blade or rack workstation in the data center) is supported on Windows XP SP3 32-bit Professional.
  • HDX 3D online plug-in for Windows (client) is supported on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista. The plug-in is supported on both 32-bit and 64-bit OS versions.

Download a free Eval and try it out!

The detailed requirements can be found in the HDX 3D 1.0 Requirements Guide. The short answer is that you can use any GPU (e.g. NVIDIA or ATI) that is capable of supporting the 3D graphics applications that you need to deliver. It is a good idea to check what the application vendor recommends if you have a particular application in mind. But to get the best performance over a WAN connection (limited bandwidth), you should select a CUDA-enabled NVIDIA GPU with 96 cores or more (in fact, we recommend 128 or more parallel CUDA cores). That will enable you to use the most advanced compression technology. The NVIDIA Quadro FX 4600, 5600, 3800, 4800 and 5800 are all suitable for delivering 3D graphics over a WAN connection.

Is there any strategy to support HDX 3D for the new Feature "VM Hosted Apps" in FP2 for XENAPP?

    This would be cool.

I've been working with the HDX 3D code for a few weeks now and I have to say it does a really great job.  There's a few minor issues that I'm sure will be worked out in the next release, but I'm very impressed.  Great job Citrix!

For those attending the Citrix User Group Norway's Autumn Event in Geilo, Norway (http://cug.no) next week I'll be showing some recorded videos of HDX 3D in action.

    Derek:

I have HDX 3D running in a rackmount PC in our datacenter. We have Nvidia Quadro FX 3700 running on XP with 4 GB RAM.

I have tested AutoCAD 2010 and Adobe CS 4 (Photoshop, Premiere) and MS Visual Studio 2008 . the performance is outstanding!!!

I do see pcaDispMgr.exe keeping utilizing 20-25% CPU utilization. What is this process and why it's running so high?

Multiple monitor support, since most users who are going to use HDX3D will be power users that have multiple 20+' monitors, the currently release will not be production ready in terms of replace their current workstations. It will be great if we could have users use thin client working on multiple monitors with HDX3D remotely.

Things still does not work, mkv format movies, real player format videos and 3D games (call of duty crashed)

This is a great start and good job on deliver such a solutions. As an ASP provider, we are finally able to deliver 100% windows applications.

    Cheers

    Mark

Great to hear! What model of rackmount workstation are you using?

Normally, on a quad core workstation, picaDisplayMgr.exe will consume around 20-25% CPU when idle. This is by design. Its actual usage while working (e.g. rotating a model) depends on the frame rate; it can be lower than 25%.

As noted in the Admin Guide, overlay buffer support is not offered in this release. Playback of mkv format movies etc. works fine if you turn off the overlay buffer in the media player application. If you need additional technical assistance, please take full advantage of our XenDesktop Support Forum.

      Thanks for the feedback!

When will HDX for Windows 2008 x64 be available ? Flash slowness is one of the main reason why Citrix Xenapp is not deployed for a lot of companies that use flash video.

This solution/constellation shown in your video could be a perfect solution for one of our customers!

Is this solution available, all information i can actually find shows a solution with a GPU on the server-side not the local installed GPU on client-side (like in your video)!

      Hi Dominik,

Currently, client-side rendering of graphics for hosted desktops and applications is limited to 2D graphics, but as you saw in the video we are developing a technology to deliver Aero by leveraging the IGP or GPU on the user device.
