Citrix was planning on having a Citrix Technology Professionals (CTP) Summit meeting this month to announce new Virtualization experts to the CTP program. For reasons that I am still a little shocked about, the CTP summit is going to be rescheduled, due to some very interesting clauses in the contract that every vendor has to agree to before being a sponsor of the upcoming VMworld event. It appears that VMware has come up with some very interesting event tactics. Below is a quote from the contract that Citrix has to sign and agree to for having a booth at VMworld.
"Exhibitor agrees that it may not use any Organizer event to leverage or promote any other event in which Exhibitor is a sponsor or participant, and therefore agrees that it may not, during the period from two days before until two days after the Event, conduct, promote, endorse, or sponsor any functions, classes, seminars, exhibits, or similar marketing activities within 50 miles of any event similar to the Event that is the subject of this agreement, other than Exhibitor's participation in the Event under this Agreement."
Citrix is a big enough of a company that, that not everyone is aware of everything that is going on all the time. We had been planning the upcoming CTP summit for some time now, and just found out about the VMware clause, what a shame we have to reschedule it, as I think participants that would have gone, would have capitalized on going to both events.

Citrix has never enforced the clause ( and to my knowledge neither has VMware ). We have asked our event vendor to remove this restriction for our Synergy 2010 agreement. Thanks to others who have provided feedback and details on their events.

We were looking to hold multiple events a year, since things move along at too rapid a clip to get by on one. When a good number of CTPs told us they were going to VMware – and especially since this is the first meeting that coincides with the creation of, and could offer specialized sessions for, CTPs with XenServer certification – we thought it would be a good opportunity.
2) The only reason we publicized this in any way is that we told the CTPs at our last meeting, at Synergy, that we were aiming to have a meeting at VMworld. We notified them on the CTP website that this would be postponed. We didn't issue a press release; we didn't complain about it; we simply notified the CTPs. Some of them decided to publicize it.
3) To be clear, we didn't complain about it. The language we posted was very clear that we fully understood their (or Microsoft's or our or anyone else's) rights to do this:
"We want to emphasize that VMworld is clearly VMware's event, and as such, they have the right to change the rules, limit the booth size of competitors and add new restrictions like the above. We are simply pointing out the reason for the change in plans since many of our Citrix Technology Professionals had requested an in-person meeting at the show. Unfortunately, we will not be able to comply this year without violating VMware's new 50-mile restriction. Thanks in advance for understanding. (BTW, we should also note that while the Citrix Silicon Valley Headquarters technically falls within VMware's 50-mile ban, we would be happy to host any out-of-town CTPs at our Santa Clara offices should they want to make the trek south. We're sure our friends at VMware will understand)."

Personally I believe that VMWare is the "master". :´-)
My opinion is that Citrix would not have to go to such events because it is direct competition, unless there is an exchange of technology, I think Citrix is big enough to navigate and get along with almost all Microsoft the market for virtualization CPD.
On the other hand I find that VMWare is not properly and its the practices are not correct, can not block the promotion of the program since the CTP program is not theirs and has been around for years.

Now that competition is real, it's only natural that VmWare to would seek to change the rules somewhat. What business wouldn't? Citrix, Microsoft, Oracle and others have benefited hugely from this convention, and arguably, at a cost to VmWare. How many other companies do you know would even allow their competitors to set up shop at their conference to the degree that VmWare does?
Is an Virtualizaiton engineer in a Rev-generating data center, I am glad to see Citrix and Microsoft emerge in the V arena. It means better options and prices for all of us.
But let's not kid ourselves, every company wants their events and and conferences to be largely successful. They are simply ensuring that their conference and company name is not undermine by another company's message. Business 101.
What Citrix and Microsoft need to do is form their own Conferences. People will come, if they are worth coming to. Microsft and Citrix pulling out together is simply a marketing stunt as neither company has been harmed by this event or it's rules.
