Lately main stream media picked up on the fact that we're building an ICA client for the iPhone. Several stories emerged, many pointing back to Al's blog as well as our most popular blog post ever by Chris Fleck.

Some have questioned if we were really working on a client or just some vaporware.

I can safely tell you that what you've heard is true, we're building an ICA client for the iPhone, but that's not all. We're not just building an ICA client for another mobile platform, we're redefining the mobile experience for Citrix users, we're building a Citrix Receiver for the iPhone.

iPhone is remarkable for its design and simplicity and we do not intend to change that, in fact, we find ourselves inspired by all its novelties.

Our goal in delivering a Citrix Receiver to an iPhone is to ensure a completely seamless transition from personal to enterprise, all in one device. Virtually millions business critical application run today on Citrix XenApp, and soon enough all of them will be at your fingertips in an iPhone near you.

We are following the very same guidelines every other native iPhone app follows, and to ensure that, we have teamed up with our friends at Apple to deliver nothing but the smoothest experience to our users.

The Citrix Receiver for iPhone will not only look and feel native to this platform but it will leverage many of the software and hardware advancements incorporated into this ingenious device. Expect a rich combination of multi-touch gestures, great usage of the iPhone's accelerometer and many more.

Our timeline can not yet be disclosed, however I can share with you that the first edition of the Citrix Receiver will be released to the App Store within the first half of 2009. In the meantime, we are building an iPhone community site within CDN, allowing us to contribute and share information with the industry as well as a mainline of communication between our development team and the community; this new site will be available soon, stay tuned.

The Project name is Braeburn (Project Braeburn), I'm the Product Architect, Al Grandville - Product Manager, and a highly skilled team of our finest Mac developers; we form the squad in charge of getting the Citrix Receiver released into the wild. On the new iPhone community site you will be able to chat, ask questions and exchange ideas with all of us.

Stay tuned, iPhone magic is coming soon!

best,
Gus

I think ica client for MAC is more usefull then iPhone one... This is my opinion.

      Hey David,

I agree with you, the Mac Client is very important, trust me, I'm a fulltime Mac user and I know the client needs improvement.

We are working heavily on a revision of our Mac client, we have many talented people focusing on this right now. The mac business for Citrix has never been more strategic; we have a huge number of Mac users internally and they also demand improvements.

The good news is that all the advancements we are applying towards Project Braeburn will benefit our next revision of the Mac Client and vise versa.

I will be blogging later next week more details about the next release and I will take the opportunity to introduce some questions that will help us better define our mac client strategy.

Thank you so much for your comment.

      best,
      Gus

It would be cool, but definitely impractical!

Trackpad gestures that are exactly the same on the iPhone and the MacBooks, just one of the features both apps could share.

Thanks for writing this up Gus. I was somewhat taken aback by the comments about us faking this. The technology behind XenApp allows us to deliver Windows apps to virtually anything with a processor. One needs only to visit our clients download page to see the myriad of platforms that we support. With XenApp the Apps are always running back in the datacenter on our robust and secure Server infrastructure, all we need on the client is our lightweight virtualization layer and we are off to the races

      Hi Arjan,

I would like to say yes, but unfortunately we can't legally distribute the application prior to its public availability on the App Store. Stay tuned, it won't take long.

      Hi Kelly,

The Citrix Receiver (formerly known as ICA Client) will be available on the AppStore within the first half of 2009. We're working really hard to get it out sooner than later.

      I hope this helps.

Did making this effort take resources away from fixing bugs and adding missing features in the existing Citrix products?

If it did, I'd call the effort wasted. Let's face it. Using Windows at 320x480 is not fun. I have an RDP client on my iPhone and it is next to
useless because of the small size of the desktop combined with the fact that my finger is larger than 1 pixel in width. All in all, I rate an
iPhone ICA client to be about -5 in importance (on a scale of 1 to 10) and about -20 in business usefulness (on the same scale).

This is great for business, excel, CRM's like act, IE8, etc. would really make me switch over. I have a mac and one of the failure points is
the lack of business apps. Some will say us mac excel but this app is gutted and cannot use VB script, macros and such.

    I look forward to this.

Not that this is up for a vote, but if it was.....

Fix the stinking bug in the Mac client that makes the shift key work randomly. You cannot imagine how much grief this causes when password requirements mandate a capital letter....

Fix the mac client and then play with the iPhone. Please.

How different is this iPhone receiver client different from the currently available clients for Symbian and Windows Mobile other than the fact it will run on a device with larger screen with a different user experience? Basically what I understood from this is that this client will allow access to published applications and also the user's desktop but that can now be done using the Symbian or Winodws Mobile clients without getting into the screen size issue. I just want to know the extra features that the iPhone client will provide?

Every time singer/songwriter JOSH SCHICKER sits down to write a song there are stories related loans to and images floating around in the same space as melodies and lyrics. A published photographer and a performing artist for more than a decade, Schicker has now found a new artistic outlet in ambient and instrumental music under the name "braeburn". The music speaks for itself. Ranging from intimate acoustic guitar to sweeping synth pads laced with ambient noise and textures, braeburn is not background music debt consolidation. It is a soundtrack for any moment experienced with eyes wide open and mouths closed. Sometimes the most compelling images are out of focus. Sometimes the most lyrical songs have no words.

Sounds good, but definitely looking forward to seeing what you guys do for the MAC. I'd find it a lot more useful than the iPhone, although of course both would be great. Is there any announcements on this as this post is quite a while ago?
