In a previous post I covered how to integrate Wake On LAN into your workflow, but how many people are currently using Wake On LAN or at least know that the majority of their servers support it?

Using WoL as part of an Active Power Management system should not be thought of as anything more than a stop-gap solution.
Increased adoption of Active Power Management in the data center will increase awareness of WoL's security weaknesses (WoL works at layer 2 and is therefore inherently insecure and open to abuse by anyone with network access) and will likely result in a push to disable it in favor of other more secure solutions. The SecureOn WoL extension has seen only limited adoption by NIC vendors and enterprise management of SecureOn passwords does not appear to have reached maturity. Which means that support for hardware vendor's proprietary solutions such as HP's ILO offering will need to be supported in the near term.
