Vyatta has commoditized router, firewall and VPN deployment in the same way that Linux commoditized the operating system market. Vyatta open-source networking offers you an alternative to over-priced, inflexible products from proprietary vendors.

Vyatta software enables customers to build routing and security solutions using standard x86-based hardware of their choosing, ensuring networks will always meet performance requirements. Vyatta open-source software delivers the unique advantage of allowing customers to scale networks from the simplest LAN configurations to large BGP WAN edge configurations using a single software package.

This open source router is already running on XenServer in a large service provider in Europe. We are using it in our Citrix Ready program as a multi-link Intranet with connections to the Internet along with high availability link load balancing.

This para-virtualized Vyatta image runs as a virtual appliance in XenServer v3.2.1 and v4.1.

    Hey Craig,

    I am trialing Xenserver at the moment, and have used vyatta before, but all comments on Vyatta's site indicate that the paravirtualized version is not yet available. Is this a preview, or is a paravirtalized version generally available?

      Paravirtualized is part of some work that has already been done between the two companies, and will be GA as Vyatta and Citrix solidify their partnership. Granted the First virtual router for XenServer was actually built by John Crawford. Thanks John, credit where due. Regards, -Craig.

        They are a bit like busses. I have been waiting 8 or 9 months, and then 3 PV routers all come along together.

        You guys might also be interested in a development of my Shorewall router VM which allows you to place multiple PXE / DHCP servers on the same subnet.

        I have created a 2 NIC Debian Etch / Shorewall VM and placed it in Bridge mode. The Shorewall policies and rules allow free flow of all network traffic except DHCP/PXE traffic which is silently dropped. By placing this between the DHCP environments they can work independently of each other without restricting other network traffic.

        At iForum in the UK we were able to have 2 complete Provisioning Server environments on the same subnet as the primary DHCP server by placing each of the PVS environments behind a filtering bridge.

        You can of course achieve the same result with a $3000 Cisco switch.
