Amazon announces VPC with support for Citrix C3
What is Amazon Web Services?
Since early 2006, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has provided companies of all sizes with an infrastructure web services platform in the cloud. With AWS customers can requisition compute power, storage, and other services-gaining access to a suite of elastic IT infrastructure services as your business demands them. In AWS, customers pay only for what they use with no up-front commitments. The Amazon Web Services cloud is distributed, secure and resilient, providing reliability and massive scale. AWS includes a number of services such as EC2, S3, SimpleDB and others. Today AWS is making available their limited public beta for their Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)
What is EC2?
Amazon EC2's simple web service interface allows customers to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides companies with complete control of the computing resources and lets customers run on Amazon's computing environment. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing companies to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing payment only for capacity used. EC2 is a key building block for VPC.
What is VPC?
Amazon is announcing a limited public beta of their Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). For the last three years, AWS has provided companies of all sizes with on-demand, highly elastic and highly reliable technology resources in the cloud. As more and more enterprises leverage the cloud, they want a simple, seamless way to migrate their large and complex IT infrastructures to AWS, and to use the security and management controls that their IT teams already know. Amazon VPC aims to address this need —to allow any company to seamlessly connect their existing resources to the AWS cloud as if it were a part of their own datacenter. To read the press release follow this link.
Using Amazon VPC, AWS customers can create an isolated set of AWS resources that they then access via an industry-standard encrypted IPsec Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. Using API calls, users create their isolated network and then launch customer-addressed Amazon EC2 instances into that network. Users then create a secure VPN to bridge those AWS resources to their existing IT infrastructure. Cloud traffic bound for the Internet routes over the VPN where it is examined by the customer's existing security and networking technologies before heading to the public Internet. With Amazon VPC, customers can access their resources running in the AWS cloud as if these assets were running within their existing IT infrastructure.
What is Citrix's involvement?
Amazon is a top tier strategic partner for Citrix in the Cloud market. Over time, Amazon VPC will enable all our enterprise customers to seamlessly expand their Citrix infrastructures, starting today with XenApp, by adding highly secure and reliable on-demand resources from AWS as a natural extension of their current on-premises Citrix based applications. Citrix will be included in AMZN's VPC press release on August 26 with a quote from Frank Artale. Other companies quotes are Intuit, Computer Associates and Eli Lilly.
What solutions or product scenarios are we launching with VPC today?
At launch we are starting with two simple use case scenarios. Over time these will be expanded upon. Use Case #1: "XA farm expansion - cloud data" includes a blueprint for customers that want to create another XA Farm in the cloud, with the datastore and license server hosted in the cloud also. Use Case #2: "XA farm expansion - premise data" includes blueprint for customers that want to expand the existing XA Farm from premise, into the cloud, using the datastore and license server at premise (Headquarters Datacenter).
Do we have an exclusive cloud relationship with Amazon?
No. While Amazon is the leader in the cloud space and thus provides us with a most important relationship, our partnership with them is not exclusive. Citrix is actively partnering with many other leading cloud vendors, hosting providers and IaaS vendors.
Is Amazon selling Citrix solutions?
No. While Amazon and Citrix endorse and promote each other's offerings, there is not a reselling relationship. Citrix customers need to bring their existing licenses to AWS, leaving our channel empowered to add value as their usually do.
Prior to today's announcement, did we already have a relationship with Amazon?
Yes. EC2 is built on opensource Xen. In addition, Amazon is a large NetScaler customer. Our partnership was officially launched on 5/6/9, when Citrix and Amazon announced the Citrix C3 Lab (press release: http://citrix.com/English/NE/news/news.asp?newsID=1690164 ). The Citrix C3 Lab was launched to run in EC2 (vs. VPC) and enables companies of all sizes to get started using Citrix technologies quickly in the Amazon EC2 environment. Since then, Citrix has been one of only nine "Amazon Featured Partners". Here is a link to our partnership: http://aws.amazon.com/solutions/featured-partners/citrix/ . Today's announcement expands our alliance from EC2 into VPC.
Where can I learn more about the new Citrix scenarios for VPC?
The Citrix Community Website, has a dedicated section to our solutions in Amazon Web Services: http://community.citrix.com/display/cdn/Citrix+C3+Lab
What does this announcement mean to a Citrix customer?
Customers can more easily expand their Citrix environment into the Amazon cloud. Starting today, a Citrix customer can use the newly launched AMIs (Amazon Machine Images) within VPC (in addition to the already available Citrix C3 Lab AMIs within EC2), in conjunction with the blueprints, which provide technical guidance. Customers will need to bring their own licenses to use these AMIs for production, even though they should realize that VPC is currently in beta form by Amazon. To learn more about Amazon's limited public beta for VPC, customers will need to visit http://aws.amazon.com/vpc/.
Citrix Support is focused on ensuring Customer and Partner satisfaction with our products. One of our initiatives is to increase the ability of our Partners and Customers to leverage self-service avenues via our Knowledge Center.

Oracle EBS 12.1 runs on XenApp
Citrix XenApp™, a member of the Citrix Delivery Center™ product family, is the industry's de facto standard for delivering Windows-based applications with the best performance, security and cost savings. XenApp is the most complete application virtualization system available with the ability to virtualize applications on both the client side and server side, delivering them on demand based on the user, the application or the location (online or offline).
By centralizing applications and data in secure datacenters, IT can reduce the costs of management and support, increase data security and facilitate business continuity. XenApp Platinum Edition adds critical capabilities for application performance monitoring, secure remote access, WAN optimization and single-sign-on application security.
Citrix XenApp is compatible with Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1. Organizations of any size can deploy XenApp on industry standard servers anywhere in the datacenter, on a single server or across all cloud computing datacenters. This simple integration takes Enterprise applications into the virtual realm, allowing customers to run Oracle on Virtual Machines, within XenServer, delivered to the end user through XenApp.

On June 16, 2009 I wrote about the results of virtualization performance tests with 32-bit XenApp and XenServer 5.5 on a dual quad core Intel Xeon x5570 (Nehalem) host server (http://community.citrix.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=73564465). I had mentioned that Intel's Hyperthreading technology on the x5570 produced sufficient logical CPU threads to allow us to build eight 2 vCPU, 3.6Gb XenApp VMs vs. only four on the x7350. It required adding another 16Gb of RAM to the x5570, but in doing so, we now had a single host server density of 554 concurrent users vs. only 188 on the x7350 host. That's three times as many users on a dual quad core system with only 16Gb more RAM. Not a bad trade off.
We recently posted a white paper to the XenServer product section of citrix.com highlighting the details of the test project. You can find it here: http://citrix.com/%2Fsite%2Fresources%2Fdynamic%2Fsalesdocs%2FXenApp_XenServer_Intel_Xeon_x5570_WP_Final.pdf. Here's the key takeaway: Virtualizing XenApp servers on the x7350 host created a 4:1 32 bit XenApp server consolidation opportunity. However, that same server consolidation opportunity was now nearly 12:1 when using the x5570! The graph below illustrates the reusults from the whitepaper. Note, we showed the effects of consolidation on the x5570 both with and without Hyperthreading.

If you are one of the many 32 bit XenApp customers still running your farm on physical servers and want to reduce your footprint in the data center, reduce your server energy consumption and cooling requirements, and take advantage of the many management benefits that virtualization with XenServer 5.5 offers, this might be all the incentive you need to get started.

I received a Tweet today from @JOHNMCBRIDE who has posted a blog post on a cool new iPhone application for XenServer Management - Xeni. The full blog post is at http://www.sharepoint-stuff.com/?p=417 and I encourage everyone to check it out.
Brief Intro from Blog Posting:
A friend of mine and I (Check out Ritch's twitter feed here and his blog here) were talking a while back about the iPhone and the adoption into the business environment. Yes there are apps out there for business, but very few and not very many which people would use everyday in business. Now, coming from and IT/Dev background we also noticed a lack of enterprise management utilities that were native iPhone apps.
That lead to a few idea's for iPhone projects, some of them I can't talk about right now, but stay tuned I'll blog about them in the near future. Just think Healthcare, iPhone and micro startup
.
The first of these projects is an app we are calling Xeni (Pronounced Xen-eeee) and is one of the apps that will give enterprise admin's and alternative application to help perform their daily job functions. Can you guess what it is?
Well, this iPhone application is all about managing your XenServer environment, from the XenServers to the Virtual Machines to the user sessions and beyond, all from a native application on the iPhone. We are not releasing this application yet to the appstore as we are still in the testing phase but wanted to let the community know what is coming down preverbal pike and show off some screenshots.
By now, you've probably been hearing or reading a lot about Citrix's relationship with Intel...or at least we're hoping that's the case!
Most of the recent news has been focused on our joint collaboration in the development of Citrix XenClient. XenClient is one of the most exciting projects in Citrix's history and we can't wait to see how the project changes the definition of desktop virtualization. With that said, there are optimization activities currently underway with our Citrix Deliver Center products, such as Citrix XenServer and Citrix XenDesktop that are worth talking about too!
Intel and Citrix have a long history of working together to deliver end-to-end solutions for the enterprise. From how Citrix XenServer works with Intel Xeon processors to how Citrix XenApp and Citrix XenDesktop work alongside Intel vPro technology to our joint development of Citrix XenClient, there is a great story in this partnership.
At Citrix Synergy 2009, Tom James, Business Development Manager, Digital Office Platform Division from Intel presented how solutions and technologies from Intel work with Citrix Delivery Center. For those of you who weren't able to attend Synergy or those who could but didn't have a chance to check out this session, it's available here for your viewing pleasure.
In this webinar you will learn:
- About recent server consolidation testing conducted in the Citrix Lab with Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenServer and Intel Xeon 5500 Series processors
- About the upcoming local desktop virtualization platform - XenClient - Citrix is developing in conjunction with Intel and how we see it changing the client landscape moving forward
- About the other collaboration areas from a technical perspective and how they add customer value

After going through the Direct VHD Boot process for HyperV which was a feature of PVS 5.1 the next question that came up was "Does it work with Xenserver?" and the answer that came back was "It technically should work but it is not officially supported yet." So we decided to do the next logical thing and give it a try.
( "New way to upgrade with PVS 5.1 and HyperV"
http://community.citrix.com/blogs/citrite/trevorm/2009/07/28/New+Way+to+Upgrade+with+PVS+5.1+and+HyperV )
The process works similar to HyperV but there are a few details to consider before using this feature with Xenserver.
First the XS storage repository being used needs to support VHD so that would include a NFS share or EXT2/3(Local SR, SAN, or ISCSI) SR partitions not LVM.
We will need the following items to get started:
-PVS 5.1 Server
-Xenserver 5.5 with a EXT or NFS Storage Repository
-Windows 7 RC PVS VHD image captured from a PC(in my case a wyse Rx0)
-SCP ssh client utility
1. First we will start by copying our win7 VHD file using SCP ssh utility from our PVS store to the Xenserver storage repository. In our case is a Local SR formatted with EXT3.

2. In XenCenter create a new VM from a template(vista or 2008) and make sure to choose the correct SR for the disk which is EXT or NFS. Uncheck the box to start automatically.

3. Rename the PVS VHD file we copied over with the same name as the one which was created by our VM. We can do this at the xenserver host console or in my case the SCP ssh utility console.
We should see a new VHD disk created for our new VM and the VHD we copied from the PVS server. For my SR the path is /var/run/sr-mount/"new uuid".vhd
4. Power on the virtual Machine. Windows 7 will boot up and start installing the default drivers for xenserver using plug n play. It will not find the new scsi device driver but you can ignore for now. Then when prompted to reboot choose to manually reboot later.
5. Before rebooting go to the command prompt and run bcdedit /set loadoptions "PV|=2000" to modify boot.ini and then reboot.
6. Uninstall PVS client from add remove programs then reboot.
7. Install the Xenserver 5.5. Tools and then reboot. It will finish adding the drivers at next boot up so I rebooted a second time. (may not be necessary)
8. Install the PVS 5.1 client but before rebooting (very important) You will be prompted to choose which NICs you want PVS to bind to. Choose all inactive and active nics. If you using a XP or 2003 image you might need to manually start "c:\program files\citrix\provisioning services\bindcfg.exe"
9. Next go to the command prompt and run bcdedit /deletevalue loadoptions then Shutdown.
10. Now we copy our updated VHD back to PVS.
11. Rename our VHD file to the appropriate name and then add back into the PVS console.
12. You now have a updated PVS VHD file which can be streamed to a physical server/PC, Xenserver host VM,
or directly booted in Xenserver.
**Eventhough this process seemed to work fine it is not yet officially supported and testing has been limited.
**To save time in updating pvs client or NIC software you could use NFS which will provide you the ability to present the NFS SR to the PVS server and Xenserver. Doing this would allow you to skip the steps of copying the VHD to and from the Xenserver SR.
**The use of Xenconvert as a method to move the VHD to and from the Xenserver in this process could be a great option but we are still testing that out for this process.
Since we "set XenServer free" earlier this year, we've been watching the acceptance of free enterprise-class virtualization take off. We've talked about the numbers before -- but numbers only tell half the story.
It's been gratifying to see that not only are the number of companies downloading XenServer and activating it for ongoing production use growing, but the size and scope of the companies using the product has been expanding, as larger companies discover the savings they gain from using no-cost virtualization infrastructure software for every server, purchasing support to provide assurance, and adding Citrix Essentials for their business-critical workloads to provide the added benefits of high availability, dynamic provisioning and workload balancing, and StorageLink-powered integration of intelligent storage capabilities.
With the certification by the Burton Group of XenServer with Citrix Essentials as meeting 100 percent of the their required features for enterprise production, businesses of all sizes are seeing alternatives to huge virtualization expenditures. It's great to see XenServer showing a consistently greater share of those organizations around the world that they have choices.
