Starting next week, Citrix will be accepting speaking proposals for our big Synergy conference, May 11-14 in San Francisco. Synergy is focused on the growing convergence between virtualization, networking, and cloud computing. Because interoperability and openness are central to this theme, we'd like to encourage technical experts and thought leaders around the industry to contribute proposals that focus on a wide range of real world topics, not just those that center exclusively on Citrix technologies. While we're obviously very proud of our own solutions and welcome submissions that feature Citrix, we also believe customers are best served when vendors provide open forums that deal with the real challenges and issues they face every day, especially when those issues involve getting products from multiple vendors to work well together.
With this in mind, we'd love to hear your ideas for topics you think would make great sessions at Synergy. This is your chance to share innovative ideas about how to break from the costs and complexities of the distributed computing status quo and build a SIMPLER and more cost efficient computing environment.
Synergy call for topics submissions will be judged by a selection committee that includes independent analysts, journalists and enterprise IT professionals - we will be naming names soon, and promise a few surprises! The committees will be looking for compelling, technically rich content that details proven and innovative ways to use virtualization, networking and cloud computing concepts to create a dynamic, agile IT infrastructure. Don't be afraid to be edgy, provocative and creative. We want sessions that tackle the real world technical and business issues customers are dealing with today, not just vendor sales pitches.
In general, we are looking for submissions that address trends, technologies, and proven solutions in the following areas:
- Desktop virtualization
- Application virtualization
- Server virtualization
- Cloud computing
- Application networking
Check out the Synergy site for more information and to submit your topic! We're really looking forward to getting input from the larger community since there seems to be a great deal of energy for an open conference on these topics. We want to hear from you!
It's been amazing to watch the flurry of blogs and press articles flying around the Internet about the upcoming VMworld conference next week. There's been rampant speculation about a huge blowout fight that reportedly erupted between Citrix and Microsoft on one side... and show sponsor VMware on the other. Articles have referred to "dustups", "swords drawn" and my personal favorite... a "flaming handbags at dawn fight." Wow... sounds like a scene right out of Pirates of the Caribbean, Part IV!
I love a good story as much as anyone, but the reality in this case is actually far less dramatic. Not only have there been no fireworks or fisticuffs between Citrix and VMware, there haven't even been any sharp words exchanged. While Citrix obviously competes aggressively with VMware in the marketplace, no customer wants to see their strategic vendors resort to the kind of childish catfights or event boycotts that some stories have reported. While these speculations make for an entertaining read, it's important to set the record straight.
Despite reports to the contrary, Citrix did not pull out of VMworld this year. Far from it. When VMware announced the availability of sponsorships for their San Francisco show earlier this year, Citrix promptly returned the paperwork requesting a Gold Sponsorship, just as we've done in previous years. VMware's event management firm responded quickly (and very politely, I might add), informing us that due to "new guidelines", Citrix was no longer allowed to sponsor the event. When we expressed our surprise at this change (again, very politely) we were informed that the most we could do this year is set up a small 10x10 booth. They also politely pointed out new guidelines for "non VMware partners" suggesting the appropriate use of product demos and activity in and around our booth to be sure we were aware of them. Apparently we weren't the only ones singled out, as several other bloggers noted at the time.
In parallel, a couple of Citrix employees outside of corporate marketing inquired at a nearby hotel about the possibility of renting conference rooms to hold customer and user meetings, something we frequently do at large industry trade shows. With so many customers already in the area, we find events like this make a convenient venue to hold a variety of get-togethers with folks we normally see only over email or GoToMeeting. After hearing that we were from Citrix, however, the hotel informed us (also very politely) that Citrix was on a "do not rent to" list supplied to them by VMworld, so they could not support our request.
While we were admittedly a bit surprised by these changes and wish we had an opportunity to participate more broadly, I can assure you there were no swords, dustups or angry rants. And certainly no flaming handbags. We understand that VMworld is a proprietary event run by one vendor and agree they have every right to change the rules in any way they wish. Citrix respects that right and will comply with the terms of our show contract. At the end of the day, if customers want a more open event, they will have to give that feedback directly to VMware.
Meanwhile, I'm happy to confirm that Citrix WILL be exhibiting at VMworld. Attendees can find us in booth #1938 (a cute little 10x10 tucked in between Emulex and Netuitive... you can't miss it). And while we may not be able to fit many people in our booth this year, I can assure you we have plenty of exciting things to talk about and would love to see each and every attendee stop by. We'll even show you how to use our products with VMware if you like!
Most of all, I want to assure you that we're not mad at anyone, including our friends at VMware. Life is too short for that. This is an exciting and vibrant industry with more than enough room for both of us. And there are an abundance of venues outside of VMworld to talk with customers and share our vision of a simpler, more open way of delivering IT as an on-demand service.
I'd also like to be the first to personally extend an offer to VMware (or any other virtualization, networking or cloud vendor, for that matter) to sign up now to sponsor our upcoming Synergy 2010 conferences next year. We'd be delighted to have you as a silver, gold or even platinum sponsor... whatever your budget allows! If you sign up to sponsor both Synergy San Francisco in May and Synergy Berlin in October, in fact, I'll even give you a great package deal! I'd also like to invite any of the smart folks at VMware, or anywhere else out there, to submit session topics for next year's Synergy events. An open Call for Papers will be publicized broadly starting on September 8th with presenters chosen by a selection panel that includes folks from Citrix as well as independent industry analysts, publishers, bloggers and other thought leaders in the industry. Call us crazy, but we actually WANT competitors presenting at Synergy. It makes for a far richer and more interesting event for everyone. After all, we're all working side-by-side at the same customers anyway, right?
And while I don't mind poking a little fun at our friends at VMware for their overly sensitive guidelines this year (c'mon guys...what are you afraid of?), I'll be the first to admit that Citrix has made our share of silly paranoid moves in the past as well. It's easy to do when you're in a highly competitive industry and passionate about your products, as both of us undoubtedly are. But I can promise you that we're doing our best here at Citrix to be more open, more transparent and more inclusive. Thanks to all 230,000 of our customers for their business. We'll see you all next week at VMworld in booth #1938... just please don't all try to come at the same time!

Geek Speak Live! at Synergy 09 was a raging success, the result of having the most seasoned, skilled technologists from across the globe assembled in one high-energy location for a three day, content rich, audience interactive event!
Event Highlights
Some memorable GSL! at Synergy 09 moments include:
• A Geek Speak Tonight! session where three esteemed Citrix CTOs - Simon Crosby, Brad Pedersen, and Michael Harries, and three renowned Citrix CTPs - Rick Dehlinger, Brian Madden, and Bernhard Tritsch - shared their thoughts on the future of application delivery. When is the last time you witnessed six brilliant thought leaders on one stage discussing their ideas and projections about one of the hottest trends in IT?
• Two separate and unique Terminal Server vs. VDI sessions run by Rick Dehlinger, Brian Madden, and Bernhard Tritsch. In one session, Rick played Dr. Friedrich von Dehlingerhausen, IT specialist, who helped Benny and Brian's alter egos "TS" and "VDI" discover they had more in common than meets the eye. In the other, this triad of talented speakers began what was an excellent TS vs. VDI debate when, suddenly, the CTO speakers from Lounge B of the Geek Speakeasy decided to join in on their discussion. The result? An impromptu, highly entertaining twist on the already successful session. You'll just have to watch the videos to experience the sensation.
• At the Geek Speakeasy during Expo Hall, we had the opportunity to take a 50-minute journey toward a better understanding of "Client Side Virtualization: How Does It Help, How Does It Make Things Worse?" led by Simon Crosby and Ian Pratt. And how about Gabe Knuth's informative Geek Speakeasy session on the topic of "Client Hypervisors: What, How, When, Why, and Who?"
• A series of interactive Geek Speakeasy lab sessions on Mon-Wed were run by Jason Conger, Brandon Shell, and many other CTPs and technology experts. Demos and deep dives and test results, oh my!
• At Geek Speak Tonight!, Martin Duursma provided insight into "Why All Remote Access Solutions Are Broken," followed by Kurt Roemer and Charles Aunger who shed light on how to achieve "Security, Compliance, and Privacy in the Citrix Delivery Center."
• During Geek Speak Happy Hour, Ruben Spruijt and Jeroen van de Kamp, two Citrix CTPs, delivered a fantastic session about their "Project: Virtual Reality Check," a masterful follow-up to their Geek Speak Virtual! webcast that took place on March 26. We listened intently as they unveiled data and findings from this independent project, and shared their resulting analyses and best practices.
• Two Geek Speak Track sessions became a double-header lesson in awesome: Steve Greenberg and Joe Shonk shared their expertise on "When to Use which Virtualization Platform," while Brad Pedersen and Richard Hayton gave us solid insight into the "Future of Remoting Protocols."
• And a Geek Speak Tonight! session that deserves a special highlight...Shawn Bass's "XenDesktop 3.0: One Year Later, What's the VDI Landscape Look Like Now?," a fantastic follow-up to last year's session that included Shawn's acute and thoughtful observations of the latest XenDesktop release, turned out to be one of the most thought-provoking and entertaining sessions of Synergy 09!

As you can probably imagine, life in a fast-paced technology company like Citrix can be a little hectic, especially around product launch time and around events like Citrix Synergy. Now picture this...
I'm at Citrix Synergy watching the keynote and all of a sudden I start getting e-mails from Citrites in the audience and back at headquarters who are looking for more information on connecting back to headquarters using our shiny new Citrix Receiver for iPhone. Now, I know that I posted a short document on the step by step process for doing this in our environment. The problem is that the document was missing a critical piece in it (my fault) and I needed to update it immediately. The show was at the MGM Grand (a huge sprawling hotel in Las Vegas) and my room was pretty far away so it would have taken me 15 minutes to get to my room, 10 minutes to update the doc, and another 15 minutes to get back. I would have missed 40 minutes of the keynote. I had no connectivity from the keynote area except using 3G with my iPhone. What better time to put our new stuff to the test.
So... I logged into our Access Gateway via the Receiver for iPhone and used my domain credentials and RSA token to login and get a list of my apps. I tap Doc Finder, open my instruction doc and edit it using a full version of Microsoft Office. No big deal... just had to add a couple of lines of text. I save it off and then go back to my app list and open Internet Explorer. From there, I visit my Sharepoint site and upload the document. I even manage to make a couple of updates to the web page where it's posted before I sign off and 'reply to all' that the solution has been posted and problem fixed.
It took me 15 minutes to do it and I didn't miss a single second of opening keynote at Synergy. Sure... you could argue that I needed the exercise and should have walked back to my room but the opening keynote speaker was amazing and I'm happy I didn't go. The Receiver for iPhone allowed me to get my job done in a pinch to keep other employees productive. Now that's value you can take to the bank.
What was my experience like? I imagine there were lots of folks using the Receiver from the keynote over 3G and I was experiencing some sluggish performance but not enough to make the experience unusable. I think we still have a little bit of work to do on click/tap accuracy because there were a couple of times where I had trouble positioning the cursor (it could have also been Sharepoint. On memory, I can't remember where to place the blame
). It took a little bit of practice but I got the hang of it. Thank goodness for Pan and Zoom and copy and paste on the keyboard. The Save button also afforded me a little extra time too. All in all, it worked quite well in the pinch I was in. This is exactly what the Receiver for iPhone was created for.
Now if only Apple would create a cradle that could turn my iPhone into a thin client. That would be awesome!

Jerome Reid manages both the Citrix Technical Support escalation team and the frontline teams for XenServer and Provisioning Server in the Dublin, Ireland office which assists customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Jerome will be presenting the following sessions at Citrix TechEdge during Citrix Summit and Citrix Synergy 2009: End-to-end virtualization with Citrix Delivery Center, with a focus on Citrix XenServer, and then his in-depth session will cover Disaster recovery and automation with XenServer.
Q. How has XenServer improved from a support perspective over the past year?
Jerome: Much work has been done over the past year to improve the support processes for XenServer. We now have a dedicated team in each GEO with responsible for managing cases that are referred to our engineering team. This support escalation team ensures that our customer issues are prioritized correctly with engineering and that our customers are aware of their case status. Escalation is also able to bring pre-release solutions in the form of private fixes to customers which allows us to be confident at the earliest opportunity that the fixes for bugs are really addressing the reported issues. We have also been working hard in support to understand the key areas in the product that can be improved from a support and supportability perspective. We have projects designed to allow us to capture this information and carry it to the engineering team. This is a key driver for product development going forward. Q. What XenServer and Citrix Delivery Center tips will attendees learn at your session this year? Jerome: The session will provide the key information you need to consider when implementing a disaster recovery plan for a XenServer deployment. We'll review how to use the different backup and restore mechanisms provided with XenServer 5.0, including VM metadata backup, XenServer host backups and database backups. In addition we'll automate the different backup mechanisms using Xenserver consoles and CLI scripting, and show how to leverage the XenServer CLI for task automation via scripting.
About Jerome Reid
Jerome has been with Citrix Technical Support just over five years. He began as an escalation engineer in the Dublin, Ireland office supporting EMEA customers. He then took on management of the XenApp escalation support. Recently he's been responsible for managing the Server Virtualization and Provisioning support team. In this role he's responsible for managing the support case lifecycle for these technologies from when a customer first logs a call with technical support until a resolution is provided. He graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology with a degree in Software engineering, and has his CCA. He enjoys spending time with his family of three children, two girls and a boy, age nine, six and two. He's also training for his private pilots license.
Do you have an XenServer troubleshooting area that you would like Jerome to focus on during his presentation? Leave a comment.
With Citrix Synergy fast approaching, it's time to get the word out on an exciting addition to the Citrix Booth. This year we've carved out an area where attendees can go deep (very deep) with not only Citrix product architects and gurus, but industry experts from Intel, Marathon and Oracle. Our experts have been prepped that no question on the topic of the hour is too technical; so bring your implementation questions, and we'll whiteboard up best practice solutions to get you moving toward a successful deployment.
Our schedule runs whenever the Expo hall is open, so please come by and try to stump our experts. As you can see, we have some meaty topics for your enjoyment.

A new topic has been added to the Geek Speak Topics Voting Tool.
Topic: Federal Government and Cloud Computing
Those of you who work in the federal sector know changes like cloud computing take a lot of time in the federal sector to come about due to the amount of bureaucracy inherent in the system.
The goal of this discussion is identify the elements that will cause the tipping point for the adoption of cloud computing in our government.
The following are some topics that can be used to initiate the discussion.
1. What is cloud computing mean in the federal sector? (Cloud as service, cloud as platform, what will it do?)
2. Define what the current dominate design is for cloud computing today, and predict where key innovations will drive the technology when it is widely accepted in the federal government.
3. Determine what the technology roadmap is going to look like over the next 3 to 5 years? What key innovations are necessary to make the adoption of cloud computing in the government a reality?
4. Discuss what the best practices might be for adopting cloud computing initiatives. (Lower cost, improve compliance, simplification, and increased productivity).
