The launch of Windows 7 fills me with dread and excitement. The dread comes from coordinating Citrix Global Platinum sponsorship of this launch with North America Roadshows, Virtual Live Events, TechEd EMEA and local launch events. The excitement comes from the promise of Windows 7 after the relative disappointment of Vista (I must stress the word "relative"), as the performance of Windows 7 is definitely promising to live up to the hype.

I moved to California from London just over 11 months ago. Obviously there is a significant cultural and climatic shift involved and a settling in period is a necessity to find your feet. Having travelled all over the world I have embraced as many aspects of different cultures and enjoyed experimenting.
One such aspect I have noticed here in California and in fact right throughout the US is the love of cheese. A meal smothered in cheese is normally accompanied by a side dish of, guess what, MORE cheese. Normally I reserve this dairy delight for a cracker or with some wine but 'Here' it is on everything.
Ordering a Cheeseburger with no cheese always raises a quizzical look from the waitress and a thought process which starts with "You are weird" and progresses to "Is he a serial killer?". Even the lactose intolerant demand that their lunch, dinners and daily snacks have heavy cheese content. Asking colleagues, "why do they have so much cheese on their food?" the simple answer was, "it tastes so good with cheese".
One technically gifted colleague decided to explain this using the analogy that Citrix XenApp and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services(the technology formerly known as Terminal Services) have the same relationship as cheese and hot meals(zzzz). The hot meal is the platform, Microsoft, and the cheese is the value-add, XenApp, which brings the meal to life. Beating this analogy to a quick death, then Citrix has a number of cheeses, Citrix XenDesktop, Essentials for Hyper-V and Branch Repeater which embrace and extend the Microsoft Platform to supply a sumptuous meal.

Andrew Renne, a Solution Architect with Microsoft Services UK, recently blogged about Microsoft VDI and Citrix XenDesktop at the Deployment Guys blog on TechNet. Andrew writes "In this second blog entry on VDI I will explain the benefits that using Citrix Xendesktop as the connection broker can bring."
Bob Muglia and Edwin Yuen of Microsoft demoed Citrix XenDesktop as part of the Microsoft VDI solution with Hyper V and SCVMM at Citrix Synergy. You can watch he video here (scroll down to the bottom). Brian Ehlert made his own video of the XenDestop/Hyper V/SCVMM integration for his entry into the XenDesktop Beta Video Tips.

Two things I'm going to do; then post by this weekend:
- Upgrade inplace Hyper-V RC0 to RC1, SCVMM (Betav1) to (Betav2), and the effects on the XenDesktop components...
- How will the DDC behave? Will I have to reinstall the DDC if the SCVMM component has been upgraded?
- We know we have to update the hypervisor and the paravirtualization drivers, but just what doI need to do to update everything? I'm hoping for an "autoupgrade" of the drivers. That's the holy grail with virtualizing guests, in my opinion. Anybody listening?
- Fresh reinstall of Server Core (it's so much sexier and less to manage than the full install), comparing notes to the RC0 setup, and see if there are any Delta changes. I would imagine there would be zero...but we will see.

So I was tinkering around with Hyper-V, and thought I'd give this a go.
Server Core installation was completely new to me, and I was thinking it would be fairly "simple". I was right, but kinda not right. I'm not used to CLI commands, so I had to do some hunting around for a bit. I found some great articles, and unsupported tools that really accelerated setting this system up. Maybe this will help you get XenDesktop up and functional with the latest releases of Hyper-V, and if you choose to, use Server Core.
EDIT: Please note that Citrix does not yet officially support XenDesktop on Hyper-V and SCVMM 2008. We expect to within a release time frame surrounding MS' official release of SCVMM.
