Courtesy of the Citrix Project Kensho work over the past 18 months we have spent a good deal of time looking at the interoperability of virtual machines between hypervisors.

If you didn't already know: Kensho uses the still evoloving OVF Standard from the DMTF and has given rise to the Citrix OVF Tool; that can export multi-vm workloads from XenServer and/or Hyper-V, as well as import OVF content from VMware into XenServer or Hyper-V. Kensho has also added the OVF capabilities into XenConvert.

Before we outline the steps below, Hyper-V was chosen for this first example because the publically available tools are Hyper-V specific, and because Citrix is using VHD as its OVF package standard. There will be more later about taking this same VM to ESX.

The Tools:
We need to obtain (download) a few things and a couple need to be installed.

Explanation of the Tools:
The Merchandising Server is the appliance used for the example. XenConvert is to convert the XVA (XenServer export format) into an OVF based appliance. The Kensho OVF Tool is to import the OVF into Hyper-V. The Linux distribution "Live CD" is to mount the virtual disk of the appliance to modify the Grub boot loader and copy some files. And the v1 Linux Integration Components have the magic PV kernel shim that is needed.

The process:

  1. Expand the Merchandising Server bz2 zip archive. (WinRAR can do this, and others as well)
  2. Use Citrix XenConvert 2.x to convert from "Xen Virtual Appliance" to "Open Virtualization Format (OVF) Package"
    • Do not create an OVA, just an OVF.
  3. Use Citrix Kensho OVF Tool to Import the OVF Package from step 2 to a Hyper-V host.
    • Do not boot the VM at this time.
  4. Attach the Live CD ISO to the VM
  5. Set the boot order to boot from DVD first
  6. Remove the default Network Adapter and add a Legacy Network Adapter
  7. Add a second DVD drive
  8. attach the Hyper-V (v1) Linux IC ISO to the second DVD drive of the VM
  9. Boot the VM into the Live CD and log in to its console
    • Debian will auto logon as 'user'.
  10. switch to root: sudo -i
    • This command is specific to Debian Live
  11. Discover the IDE disks:
    1. cd /dev
    2. ls hd*
  12. Mount the virtual disk (the vhd)
    1. make a mount point folder: mkdir /mnt/mine
    2. mount the disk to the folder: mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/mine
  13. explore the volume
    1. cd /mnt/mine
    2. ls
  14. /mine looks like a common Linux /boot volume:
  15. Mount the Linux IC DVD drive (mine is the second dvd on controller 2):
    1. mkdir /mnt/cdrom
    2. mount /dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom
  16. Copy the kernel shims from the ISO to the virtual disk
    1. cd /mnt/cdrom/shim
    2. cp . /mnt/mine
  17. Edit the device.map
    1. cd /mnt/mine/grub
    2. nano device.map

  18. Edit the GRUB bootloader to load the shim and the kernel.
    1. nano menu.lst
  19. Comment the 'hiddenmenu' option and increase the timeout so I can test.
  20. Create a new entry specific to the shim and the distribution kernel-xen
    • Notice that the kernel is the shim file copied from the previous step and the existing kernel and initrd load as modules of the shim.
  21. Modify the default selection to point to my new entry.
    • The default entry begins counting at "0"
  22. Unmount the virtual disk and the cdrom
    1. cd /
    2. umount /dev/hda1
    3. umount /dev/hdd
  23. Shutdown the virtual machine and remove the ISOs from the DVD drive (also remove the second virtual dvd drive).
  24. Boot the virtual machine, note the new menu selection that was created - this is the kernel that should boot. Select it if you did not set it as the default.

Greg Shields recently posted an article on TechTarget's SearchServerVirtualization.com site listing the "five best free tools for Microsoft Hyper-V management".

Greg included Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V - Express Edition on his excellent list of Hyper-V tools -

Best Free Tool 5: Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V, Express Edition

Citrix hasn't traditionally been known for free software, but in recent months, it has been changing its pricing for virtual products. After announcing that it would make its flagship virtualization product XenServer free, Citrix has upped the ante by recently announcing a limited version of its virtualization management product Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V.

Why use this product over Hyper-V's management tool sets? Simply put, Citrix is known for its high-end management systems. Now that hypervisors in virtualization software are approaching feature parity, many in the industry are asking, "How do I best manage my virtual infrastructure?" Citrix has offers enterprise-ready solutions that wrap around existing systems to improve management workflow.
The Express Edition of Citrix Essentials will support up to two servers, which are both connected to a single storage array. It adds capabilities for the easy provisioning of storage through Citrix's StorageLink technology for iSCSI and Fibre Channel storage.

Read Greg's entire list here.

The launch of Windows 7 fills me with dread and excitement. The dread comes from coordinating Citrix Global Platinum sponsorship of this launch with North America Roadshows, Virtual Live Events, TechEd EMEA and local launch events. The excitement comes from the promise of Windows 7 after the relative disappointment of Vista (I must stress the word "relative"), as the performance of Windows 7 is definitely promising to live up to the hype.

So, why would Microsoft invite Citrix to be a Global Launch Partner for an operating system launch?

Normally when you want a new OS, you just go on the web, buy a new PC, and use the CD to install the OS or, if you are like me and technologically incompetent, you get your IT Department to install it. However, the technology landscape has shifted. Now there is an alternative way to get your instant Windows 7 desktop with Citrix and Microsoft Desktop Virtualization, which delivers Windows desktops as an on-demand service to any user, on any device, anywhere.

The combination of Citrix and Microsoft gives customers the fastest way to deliver Windows 7 realizing benefits of increased efficiency and simplified IT Management. In addition Citrix HDX Technology offers up to 10X better Flash multimedia performance compared to alternative solutions, delivering a user experience that is indistinguishable from a local PC.

7 Ways to get up to speed on Citrix and Microsoft Desktop Virtualization for Windows 7

1. Check out the Citrix Desktop Virtualization Live, "Secrets, Lies and VDI" event on the 20th October - register here

2. Attend the "Harness The Power of Virtualization" events with guest speakers from Citrix, Microsoft, Intel and HP - register here

3. Microsoft New Efficiency Virtual Live Event

4. North America Windows 7 Roadshows in 65 Cities for Technical Decision Makers and IT Professionals

The release of Windows Server 2008 R2 brings many new features to Hyper-V.

Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2 includes five core areas of improvement for creating dynamic virtual data centers:

*

Increased availability for virtualized data centers
*

Improved management of virtualized data centers
*

Increased Performance and Hardware Support for Hyper-V Virtual Machines
*

Improved Virtual Networking Performance
*

A simplified method for physical and virtual computer deployments by using .vhd files

A new release of Hyper-V for Windows Server 2008 also means that a new of release of Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V is coming.

Citrix just made the beta version of Citrix Essentials 5.5 for Microsoft Hyper-V available for download.

Citrix Essentials 5.5 for Hyper-V, otherwise known as the 'R2' release of Citrix Essentials, supports the latest Hyper-V and System Center enhancements now available in Windows Server 2008 R2 (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/hyperv-main.aspx ). In addition to supporting R2, Citrix Essentials adds new disaster recovery capabilities to Hyper-V with StorageLink Site Recovery.

Here's a glimpse of some of the new goodies available in Citrix Essentials 5.5 for Microsoft Hyper-V:

Site Recovery
Why put a bunch of idle physical hardware at remote recovery sites when you can accomplish your DR objectives with virtualized servers using Hyper-V? Server virtualization with Hyper-V gives your IT organization an extremely cost-effective approach to disaster recovery, while the new Site Recovery capabilities included with Citrix Essentials gives you the control you need to implement, manage, and test your DR solution.

Site Recovery uses StorageLink technology (http://community.citrix.com/display/ocb/2009/07/20/Essentials+for+HyperV+-+StorageLink+Step+by+Step+Part+1 ) to unlock underlying storage array replication services, giving you the toolset you need to enable remote fail-over strategies for their Hyper-V environments. You can use StorageLink Site Recovery to set up native storage remote mirroring services, then test the recoverability of virtual infrastructure at remote sites through the staging capabilities included with Site Recovery. Instant clones of recovery VMs can be created and placed in isolated networks where you can test recovery without impacting ongoing data replication or access to critical Hyper-V infrastructure.

Additionally, you can use workflow orchestration tools in Citrix Essentials and Windows Server 2008 Clustering to build out a completely automated DR solution for your Hyper-V infrastructure.

R2 Integration
This release of Citrix Essentials coincides with the R2 release of Windows Server 2008 to ensure you can take full advantage of advanced management and automation included with Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V. It supports the latest Windows Server® technologies, including the R2 releases of Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager. Citrix Essentials integration with the R2 release of Hyper-V and System Center includes the simplified setup and administration of shared storage assets required for Microsoft Failover Clustering and Live Migration.

Windows 7 Support
Most IT organizations will spend the coming months testing Windows 7 in their labs as they prepare to roll it out to their users. Citrix Essentials 5.5 for Hyper-V includes updates to its lab management capabilities, including support for Windows 7. Automated lab management in Citrix Essentials automates the setup and tear-down of unique workload configurations, including builds of Windows 7, using self-service template libraries for rapid provisioning and enables cross-team collaboration on common virtual environments. With automated lab management, organizations can accelerate the process of moving workloads through development and testing, and into the live production environment, while reducing virtual machine sprawl and minimizing setup or configuration errors and delays.

Grab the beta and go for a test drive.

One of the more unique features about the Project Kensho OVF Tool v1.3 is its ability to manage Hyper-V servers. The Project Kensho OVF Tool can import OVF/VMDK from VMware products directly into Hyper-V servers as well as move content between Hyper-V and XenServer.

To assist with the understanding how quick and easy this is, we've produced a simple video that explains this process:

Some items to note with Hyper-V and XenServer compatibility:

  1. When moving Linux workloads around, if the XenServer derived Linux workload is paravirtualized (PV enabled), the workload will not function on Hyper-V. Use an HVM type of VM if the intent of the workload is for cross hypervisor compatibility between XenServer and Hyper-V.
  2. When moving Windows workloads around, Windows XP/Server 2003 and higher can be migrated between platforms without driver issues, e.g., one clobbering the other.

Share your experience and use cases on the forum.  Thanks for your interest in Project Kensho and the virtual appliance future of XenServer!

I moved to California from London just over 11 months ago. Obviously there is a significant cultural and climatic shift involved and a settling in period is a necessity to find your feet. Having travelled all over the world I have embraced as many aspects of different cultures and enjoyed experimenting.

One such aspect I have noticed here in California and in fact right throughout the US is the love of cheese.  A meal  smothered in cheese is normally accompanied by a side dish of, guess what, MORE cheese. Normally I reserve this dairy delight for a cracker or with some wine but 'Here' it is on everything.

Ordering a Cheeseburger with no cheese always raises a quizzical look from the waitress and a thought process which starts with "You are weird" and progresses to "Is he a serial killer?". Even the lactose intolerant demand that their lunch, dinners and daily snacks have heavy cheese content. Asking colleagues, "why do they have so much cheese on their food?" the simple answer was, "it tastes so good with cheese".

One technically gifted colleague decided to explain this using the analogy that Citrix XenApp and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services(the technology formerly known as Terminal Services) have the same relationship as cheese and hot meals(zzzz). The hot meal is the platform, Microsoft, and the cheese is the value-add, XenApp, which brings the  meal to life. Beating this analogy to a quick death, then Citrix has a number of cheeses, Citrix XenDesktop, Essentials for Hyper-V and Branch Repeater which embrace and extend the Microsoft Platform to supply a sumptuous meal.

All of these great combos can be found here at the New Microsoft/Citrix Community Portal where we've consolidated all related news, blogs, articles, videos, etc... into the feeds section of this page. We've also created an area that highlights all related forum threads and postings. Look for answers to your burning questions, participate in an existing discussion, or you can tell us if our cheese is good or if it stinks - let me remind you that all the best cheeses stink

PS Does eating cheese in the evening give you nightmares?

There is a new Express Edition of Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V, and it is FREE! Now you can quickly and easily combine the power of Hyper-V- System Center Virtual Machine Manager and Essentials for Hyper-V Express Edition.

http://citrix.com/ehvexpress

Citrix Systems, Inc. is unveiling a new free Express Edition to its Citrix Essentials for Microsoft Hyper-V lineup. The new Express Edition is immediately available for download and includes the game-changing Citrix StorageLink technology. With StorageLink, Windows administrators can dramatically simplify their storage management processes with quick and easy storage configuration and provisioning for their Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and System Center virtual infrastructures. Citrix Essentials helps administrators take full advantage of powerful storage-based features like deduplication, thin provisioning, cloning, snapshots and replication - features that otherwise hide behind layers of proprietary, specialized virtualization storage file systems.

The new free Express Edition of Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V is designed specifically for Windows IT professional in the early phases of Hyper-V adoption. It will allow them to take advantage of the benefits of shared storage with Hyper-V and simplify storage management in virtual server environments.
The StorageLink technology featured in all editions of Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V provides Windows IT Professionals with the tools necessary to easily manage Hyper-V storage in iSCSI and Fibre Channel (FC) SAN environments, enabling them to leverage advanced storage technologies from leading storage vendors that deliver powerful features for performance, storage efficiency, and business continuity. Industry estimates have shown that by applying storage-saving technologies like deduplication and thin provisioning , Hyper-V customers can often shrink their storage footprint by upwards of 50 percent depending on the nature of their workloads. In cases where virtual machines (VMs) are highly duplicated, like virtual desktop images, many have seen a nearly 90 percent reduction in storage consumption.

The Express Edition of Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V supports up to two Hyper-V servers and one storage array. Organizations that download the free Express Edition of Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V can easily upgrade to the Enterprise or Platinum Editions. Listed at $1500 and $3000 per server, respectively, the Enterprise and Platinum Editions add dynamic server provisioning, automated lab management, automated stage management, and workflow orchestration.

Of course, Express Edition provides just a small sampling of what is possible to achieve with Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V. The Enterprise Edition includes the full version of StorageLink, Dynamic Provisioning Services for Server Operating Systems, and complete WorkFlow Orchestration.

The Platinum Edition of Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V adds in Lab Manager to provide a complete cost effective virtual lab solution, and Stage Manager to automate the process of migrating newly tested and verified configurations from the virtual lab directly into production. You can download a evaluation copy of the Platinum Edition of Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V at http://www.citrix.com/ehv.

I've been getting a number of questions from the field on whether StorageLink provides the capabilities of VMware RDM for XenServer and Hyper-V. A little detail is warranted, mainly because the answer is a bit different for XenServer and Hyper-V.

XenServer: The LUN per virtual disk model in effect provides the capabilities of raw device mapping. Prior to XenServer 5.5, customers got their LUN per virtual disk via the custom storage adapters for Netapp and Equallogic. XenServer 5.5 expands this to a larger set of storage arrays, and thats where the latest evolution of StorageLink comes in. StorageLink allows a user to assign/map a set of LUNs, and expose them as raw devices to your VM, in effect, the capability that RDM provides. This applies to existing and formatted LUNs too.

(The caveat here is that the same LUN cannot be attached to two VMs at the same time. This means that this virtual disk cannot be used as a quorum disk in an MSCS cluster of Windows VMs. But then again, Windows 2008 Failover Clustering has Node Majority, and a quorum device is no longer needed)

Hyper-V: StorageLink allows you to assign/map a set of LUNs (existing or new) and expose them as pass-through devices to Hyper-V. No caveats. These LUNs can be shared between VMs. Same as RDM.

One point worth mentioning is that StorageLink does not come in the data path. Once storage volumes are set up and mapped to virtual machines, IO is done using the existing hypervisor mechanism.
