We invited all of Citrix Ready thin client vendor partners to demonstrate to the Citrix community what makes their solutions unique in our first-ever Citrix Ready Challenge. In order to participate in this challenge, vendors had to create a short video up to three minutes long that highlights the compelling advantages for their product line with XenDesktop.

The winners will be decided based on several categories by our team of judges ( Sumit Dhawan, Chris Fleck, Doug Brown)

On of the important categories is "Best overall offering (User Community Vote)". We want you to rate videos on Citrix TV and choose the winner in this category. The Winners will be announced in the first week of August. I will have more details in subsequent blogs.

We have created a page where you can easily view and rate all the videos.

Gourami presents a free tool to uninstall every version of a ICA client from a Windows 2000 or Windows XP Workstation. It's given the name UNICA!

How it works:
When started with the correct command line options, UNICA searches the uninstall information of a workstation for every product which was released by Citrix and uninstalls it. UNICA waits till everything is finished uninstalling, and then launches the installation command line for deploying the new client.

This is a ideal tool when you have several different versions of the ICA client installed over several different workstations. This is also a great help if you have 2 or even 3 versions installed on the same workstation. UNICA automatically detects and uninstalls them.

Because UNICA uninstalls every product that is released by Citrix, it also uninstalls the presentation server console, or even presentation server itself. Therefore a safety is build in, UNICA is made not to run on Windows Server. But it is still recommended to not run UNICA on windows XenApp/Presenation servers.

UNICA does not require .NET framework or a new version of Windows Scripting Host to run. In some occasions when a computer is not equipped with Microsoft Common Controls, the MSCOMCTL.OCX needs to be next to UNICA.EXE.

Gourami is also has product which are Citrix Ready.

As the Beatles so famously declared in 1967, we can all use the help of a good friend. From day one, Citrix has always had a strong partner community to ensure that we deliver as complete and robust a solution to our customers as possible. In fact, with over 2200 companies enrolled in the Citrix Technology Member Program more than 800 products from 150 companies verified as part of the Citrix Ready Program and nearly 1200 products in 8000 instances documented in the Citrix Ready Community Verified Program, I would say that we have reached a level of partnership that few companies in the industry can match.

However, that is not enough. It's easy to partner when the economy is good, but it's even more essential to pull together when times are tough. In that spirit, the Citrix Ready team held a webinar for our Citrix Ready partners yesterday (available for Citrix Ready Partners to replay here) to discuss important new changes made in the program that will elevate the value of the Citrix Ready program not only for our partners, but perhaps more importantly, for our customers and channel partners.

The Citrix Ready team is constantly in touch with our partners to ensure that we evolve the program to ensure that the program brings value to our partner community. While there are many ways to calculate the value of a program, the most basic way to quantify the program value is to assess the value of the benefits against the cost to participate in the program, more simply stated:

Value of Citrix Ready Program == Program Benefits / Cost of Program

Obviously the quantification of the numerator is subjective and will vary for each company participating in the program, how engaged they are in the program, how many benefits they take advantage of, etc. The denominator is clearly described in terms of the program fees. Therefore, to increase the value of the program, the job of the Citrix Ready team is pretty simple - Increase the value of the benefits without increasing the costs of the program.

That might be enough if times were good. However, they are not. As such, we challenged ourselves to see if we could really, really, find a way to pull together the partner community for the mutual benefits of our customers and channel partners. I am pleased to share with you that the team did just that and found a way to increase the benefits while decreasing the program costs by 1/3!

Yes, you read that correctly, more benefits at lower costs.

(For those of you that are following the math, we increased the numerator while decreasing the denominator thereby supercharging the value of the program!)

Specifically, we announced the following new Citrix Ready program benefits:

  • Enhanced partner communication and collaboration via Citrix Ready Forums, Citrix Ready Blogs, Citrix Ready Newsletters and a Citrix Ready Steering Committee
  • Increased participation in our channel program communication and events
  • Deeper involvement with our products via quarterly technology roadmap seminar series and discounts on Citrix Education programs
  • Extended marketing benefits that include education and inclusion in our "Key Play" go to market activities, customer newsletters and Citrix Communities such as the Community Verified site

In addition, all of these benefits are available via the web regardless of what geographic location or time zone the partner is located in, providing 24x7 access enabling our partners to take advantage of these benefits when it is convenient for them, not based on Citrix's availability.

While I doubt that Vicky, Tricia, Vishal and I will ever be confused with John, Paul, George and Ringo, we certainly aspire to uphold the spirit of those Beatles from 1967.

The St.Bernard iPrism works with Citrix's Application Virtualization platform - XenApp, and works quite well. Seen as a perfect complement to each other the Citrix NetScaler and XenApp products were tested with the St.Bernard iPrism Web Filter. Both companies offer architectures of one-arm (out-of-band) and two-arm (in-band) deployments. At Citrixlabs in Santa Clara, CA, USA, we tested both the out-of-band and in-band configuration of the iPrism Web Filter. We loved the fact that the iPrism is auto-discovered by the management software, so no console cable was needed.

With NetScaler:

We deployed the iPrism Web Filter behind the NetScaler in our proof of concept datacenter in Santa Clara, CA, USA, and configured the NetScaler for NAT (Reverse NAT) for outbound connections to the Internet. NAT is often performed by the Firewall. The Web Application Firewall, also part of the Citrix NetScaler, was configured for protection of inbound security threats to websites and web applications.

The iPrism was configured to monitor outbound traffic from the internal subnet of 172.16.104.0/24, and block all traffic to offensive websites, and monitor traffic to all other websites. The Real-Time monitor in iPrism gave us a detailed report on the users and IP Addresses that were going out to which sites on the internet. We could see who was accessing what, and which content was being blocked. Particularly nice, was the fact that the iPrism automatically authenticated each user to the Citrixlabs domain controller, every time they surfed a new website, without them knowing it. This was very useful for keeping a tight grip on security and for compliance reporting.

With XenApp:

The powerful value is in the integration with XenApp. We plugged the iPrism in as an in-line device, and configured it to work with Citrix XenApp©, formerly known as Citrix Presentation Server. One of the key questions that will arise in this situation is with all of those Citrix XenApp thin clients logging into the XenApp and then launching browsers to the internet, how does iPrism keep track of them. By adding the XenApp IP Address to the iPrism configuration, the users are tracked using "Session Based Authentication" - this catches each individual user and IP Address in each browser session and in the reports. We were impressed by this and determined the iPrism to be an excellent fit into a datacenter outfitted with Citrix.

The #1 Web Filter by St.Bernard is now Citrix Ready. The Highest Performance Web Application Solution from Citrix Systems can now be deployed with the the #1 Web Filter by St. Berdard. IDC ranked them #1, SC Magazine gives them high ratings, and you will agree when you plug this thing in. The Citrix Web Application Firewall protects inbound traffic destined to Web and Application Servers without degrading throughput or response time. Now, with St.Bernard's iPrism h-Series high performance appliances, you can also do outbound Web filtering, IM/P2P filtering, and antivirus detection. The iPrism Web Filter is optimized for the datacenter infrastructure and sits behind the firewall while it monitors traffic. St. Bernard's platforms are hybrid so that Web filtering, antivirus and IM/P2P filtering are all contained within one box - unlike other point solutions.

St.Bernard's iPrism Web Filter is easy to use and easy to manage. If fact, it's so easy, we had the device up and running in Proxy mode and then in Bridge mode in a matter of seconds. The management software auto-discovers the box, so you don't have to plug in a console cable - very nice!

It is far better than a transparent proxy because St.Bernard has engineered their filtering technology at the kernel level, so their bridge mode really is a bridge between interfaces, and not just a transparent proxy like other solutions in the market.

We deployed the iPrism Web Filter behind our NetScaler, and had the NetScaler perform NAT (Reverse NAT) for outbound connections to the Internet. The iPrism Web Filter adds another level of security that IT organizations sometimes look for to complement their existing base of high-performance Citrix Gear.

One of the most common questions I here from customers is "Does this app work on Citrix?". One of the goals of the Citrix Ready program is to help our customers and ISV alliance partners answer this question.

So how does an ISV answer this question when they are doing a sale into a customer? A lot of ISVs do not have access to a XenApp or CAE environment to really answer this question. Even if they did, they may not have any expertise to setup/configure XenApp or CAE to do testing.

To help this scenario, we have been working on the creation of MyCitrixLab. An online lab environment available to Citrix Alliance ISV Partners to Citrix Ready verify their application in both XenApp/CPS and CAE environment.

MyCitrixLab is currently in Beta testing with a few soon to be Citrix Ready ISV Alliance partners and is planned to go live by Synergy 2008. If you're an ISV and have interest in use of MyCitrixLab to help get your application Citrix Ready verified, please send an email to CitrixReady@citrix.com. Or feel free to look me up at Synergy in the Geek Speak Lounge at Synergy where we can give you a early look.

So what is MyCitrixLab:

  • An online lab environment accessible via the internet that meets the configuration requirements specified in the Citrix Ready Verification Test Kits.

  • Lab scheduling environment that allows an ISV alliance partner to schedule a 3 or 7 day lab environment for use with Citrix Ready Verification.

  • SharePoint portal that contains additional information on use of the lab and helpful lab guides.
    • FAQ - additional information on the use of the lab
    • Verification Assist Guides that provide "extra details" on the use of the lab for a specific Citrix Ready Verification Kit. Step by step screen shots walk an ISV partner through each required step to complete the tests in a test kit if they are not familiar with a Citrix environment.
    • Administrator guides for products
    • Links to the Citrix Ready Verification Test Kits
    • Discussion site that lab users can leave tips and tricks on use of the lab for other users.
  • Lab Environment
    • All of the actual lab servers/workstations area running on XenServer
    • Citrix Presentation Server/XenApp preconfigured lab environments
      • Lab environments uses of CPS 4.0 or 4.5 both 32bit and 64bit labs
      • CPS servers in a farm preconfigured
      • 2 client systems preconfigured for use with the CPS farm (1 XP and 1 Vista)
      • 1 Domain controller for the isolated lab environment
      • 1 SQL servers to use with apps the require a SQL database
    • Citrix Access Essentials preconfigured lab environments
      • Lab environments uses CAE 2.0
      • 1 CAE server preconfigured
      • 2 client systems preconfigured for use with the CPS farm (1 XP and 1 Vista)
      • 1 Domain controller for the isolated lab environment
      • 1 SQL servers to use with apps the require a SQL database

Note that this lab environment is reserved for use by Citrix Alliance ISV Partners solely for the intent of Citrix Ready verification of their product, so they can help properly answer the above questions "Yes, my app is Citrix Ready for XenApp and CAE!".

The current architecture of MyCitrixLab limits it use in most cases to ISV partners, being it is secured and isolated in such a way that no direct inbound ICA connections can be made from the internet, as well as being securely isolated from other labs being hosted in the environment. This level of isolation today prevents device and other IHV vendors from using the lab. Only the XP and Vista clients in the isolated lab environment have access to the CPS or CAE server's via ICA.

At Summit in January I ran into an interesting Citrix partner - Xceedium.  It's a security company with an appliance product, called GateKeeper, that is complementary to XenApp.  It enforces security policy by providing compartmentalization and containment.

Say you are outsourcing development.  The GateKeeper provides capability they call "LeapFrog Prevention" to isolate and contain users to authorized applications and network devices.  So your outsourced developers can't do DNS look up, NFS mount, ICMP to LeapFrog to unauthorized areas and information.  It also provides tracking and reporting for compliance reasons.

In a XenApp environment, their agent monitors each user process and prevents unauthorized apps from trying to leapfrog to another device.  They also provide tracking for all CLI and prevent unauthorized CLI, so it adds to the security features of XenApp at the application layer with control over the command line/infrastructure layer.

The GateKeeper is complementary to the SmartAuditor session recording feature of XenApp, adding keystroke logging and session recording for CLI.

For customers who have audit and compliance requirements, Xceedium is an extremely interesting addition to XenApp.  They're already verified Citrix Ready too.  As a bonus, Gatekeeper is Common Criteria certified to EAL3.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 is a fully integrated customer relationship management (CRM) system. Microsoft Dynamics CRM gives you the capability to easily create and maintain a clear view of customers from first contact through purchase and post-sales. With tools to enhance your company's sales, marketing, and customer service processes, along with native Microsoft Office Outlook integration, Microsoft Dynamics CRM delivers a fast, flexible, and affordable solution.

Now that we're done with the shameless marketing description of the Microsoft product, here's the news.

It's very common for Microsoft CRM to be deployed via Citrix infrastructure, so as part of finalizing the product for release, Microsoft and Citrix jointly tested CRM with CPS to ensure absolute compatibility and to publish guidance on optimal configuration. We've tested this application on Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems and declare that Microsoft CRM 4.0 is now officially "Citrix Ready", and as information becomes available it can be found in the online solutions catalog at www.citrix.com/cr_microsoft_dynamicsCRM.
